PREFACE.

ALTHOUGH this little Manual does not aim at much-perhaps, because it does not aim at muchsome explanation of my motives for publishing it will not be deemed superfluous.

1. An experience of some years in tuition has convinced me that the teaching of Greek Accidence through the medium of a Latin Text Book is a very mischievous practice, whereby a great deal of time is wasted and nothing whatever gained.

2. I regard the attempt to make a boy grasp a principle without the help of a very large number of illustrative examples as the mistake of a radically faulty method. Children require 'Rules of Thumb' in most matters, they must learn much in order to understand little, they must store up facts in order to prepare them to receive theories, and to reverse this process is to cut-not 'Prejudice' but-Nature 'against the grain.'
