The Bar Association of the State of Tennessee, met in annual session at Memphis, Tennessee, in the Goodwyn Institute Building, Sept. 30th, and Oct. 1st, 1919, the President, the Honorable Julian Wilson, presiding, when and where the following proceedings were had:

INVOCATION BY BISHOP THOS. F. GAILOR:

Almighty God, who art the fountain of wisdom and justice, in whose wisdom is the seat of that law which is the harmony of the world, grant that those who study law, and who practice law, may so discharge their duty that the law may be reverenced, the very least as being protected by its care, the very greatest as not being exempted from its power.

Send Thy blessings, we beseech Thee, upon all of those who have been charged with legislative, judicial and executive authority, that they may have the wisdom and courage so to do their duty that it may redound to the glory of God, to the safety, honor and welfare of our country.

And we beseech Thee to bless this dear land of ours, for which our fathers lived and died. unity, protect our liberties, and save us from discord

and confusion, from lawlessness and dishonesty, from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way, that we may be but up as a people in wisdom, justice and power, sensible of our obligation of service to the world, and mighty to set forward peace and happiness throughout the world.

Be present with us this morning. Bless the deliberations of this assembly.

We ask this in the name and for the sake of Him who taught us to pray, Our Father who art in Heaven, hailowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom.come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven: Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever and ever, Amen.

THE PRESIDENT: Gentlemen of the Bar Association, I have asked Judge W. H. Laughlin, of our local Circuit Bench, to extend a welcome to our brothers of the Tennessee Bar. Judge Laughlin.

JUDGE W. H. LAUGHLIN: Mr. President and gentlemen of the State Bar Association: It is a great pleasure to me to be allowed the privilege, on behalf of the Memphis Bar and the people of Memphis, of welcoming you here on this occasion. The people of our city are no less happy than are our lawyers in having you with us, for the reason that they know who you are and the purpose of your coming. They know that you are the representative lawyers of Tennessee, and that your high characters as such are a guarantee that the State Bar Association, the embodiment of your highest ethical and professional ideals, makes for the common good of all the people of our honored State. So, in behalf of all lawyers and lavmen alike-I grasp you by the hand and greet you as brothers. I extend to you all a most hearty welcome, I bid you thrice welcome to our cityour homes our hearts.

Since the formation of our national government, in which he was a leading spirit. the representative member of the bar has always stood as the champion of constitutional freedom in this country. As a servant of the people in the legislative halls, State and National, he has always labored with an eye single to the best interests
