We have to crave the indulgence of our readers for the delay in bringing out the present Volume, which has arisen from a number of causes, over which we had no control. It was our intention originally, in this volume, to have conjoined the Natural History of the Horse and its congeners, along with the animals which it now contains ; but their number, their variety, and the interest involved in the accounts of the habits and economy of such interesting quadrupeds, seemed far too important to admit of their union, without such curtailment as would have been most injurious. We have accordingly divided the subject, and shall resume the Natural History of the Horse in another volume.
