1. Write a short essay on Commercial Education.

2. Write a letter describing a visit to London.

3. How many parts of speech are there? Is it possible to reduce their number by classification ?

4. What is meant by an auxiliary verb ? Give examples of such verbs in English, and in any other languages with which you may be acquainted.

5. Out of what other languages has the English language been formed ? What differences does the English of The Spectator present as compared with that of the authorized Version of the Bible ?

6. What do you understand by the words “ good English style? Give rules for writing such a style,

7. At what period did the first great English writer live? Mention his name and give some particulars of his life.

8. Divide the Literary History of England into great periods, giving dates, and mentioning the

greatest poet and the greatest prose writer in each period.

9. Mention the names of some of the greatest English writers on Commerce, Geography, and Political Economy, and give some account of their lives and writings.

10. Explain the derivation and meaning of commissariat, ration, quarters, garrison, bivouac, accounts, receipt, stamp, forage, cattle, provision, stores, ledger, biscuit, grain, rum, brandy, gin, cocoa, tea, coffee, meal, whisky, billet, barrack,

and mess.

1. Trace the descent of Queen Victoria from Henry VIIth.

2. Give some account of the Wars of the Roses; state the causes which led to them, the chief actors and events in them, and their results.

3. Give an account of the chief events that occurred, and of the chief persons who flourished, either between 1600-1650; or between 1750– 1800.

4. In whose reign did the following insurrections take place? What were the objects of the insurgents, and what success did they meet with ?

-Wyatt's, Jack Cade's, Wat Tyler's, the Rye House Plot, and the Cato Street Conspiracy.

5. With what events in Scottish History are the following persons connected :—Lord Darnley, John Knox, David Rizzio, Archbishop Sharp, and Claverhouse.

6. In whose reigns did the following persons flourish, and for what were they respectively famous : Cardinal Pole, Protector Somerset, Bishop Latimer, Titus Oates, Arabella Stuart, and Doctor Sacheverell ?

7. Write a short sketch of the origin of Parliaments in England, and show how their power has progressively increased.

8. In whose reign did the following events occur: The Massacre of Glencoe, the Invasion of the Spanish Armada, the Siege of Gibraltar? Give a short account of one of them.

9. When were the following battles fought, who were the contending parties, what were the names of the leaders on either side, and what was the result of the struggle in each case? Hastings, Shrewsbury, Marston Moor, The Boyne, Blenheim, Fontenoy, Saratoga, and Navarino.

10. Give a short sketch of the Peninsular War.

11. Describe the way in which England became possessed of her Indian Empire.
