INDIAN CONDITIONS AND AFFAIRS

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1935

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
COMMITTEE ON INDIAN AFFAIRS,
Washington, D. C.

The subcommittee this day met at 10: 15 a. m., Hon. Abe Murdock, chairman, presiding.

Mr. MURDOCK. The subcommittee will please be in order. All members are present, except Mr. Collins, and doubtless he will be here soon.

A request that we hear any complaints against the Klamath Reservation the first thing this morning was made by the Department Saturday, because Mr. Crawford, of that reservation, is here and desires to leave as soon as practicable, probably tomorrow. If there is any representative or spokesman of the Klamaths here, we should like to hear from him at this time.

Mr. BRUNER. I do not know any such representative.

Mr. MURDOCK. If there is no representative of the Klamaths here, we will hear the representative of any other tribe.

Mr. McGROARTY. If you will permit, Mr. Chairman, I should like to hear from Mr. Crawford. I live not far from the Klamath Indian Reservation, and an official of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce wrote me a letter one time stating that the Klamath Indians were in a pitiable condition. I wrote something about it in the newspapers and I got a letter from Mr. Crawford-I think he is the man-saying there was no truth in it at all. Unless you think we should not take up the time with Mr. Crawford, I, for my own personal satisfaction, should be glad to hear him at this time.

STATEMENT OF WADE CRAWFORD, KLAMATH, OREG.

Mr. MURDOCK. We shall hear Mr. Crawford at this time.
Mr. McGROARTY. Mr. Crawford, you are a Klamath Indian?
Mr. CRAWFORD. Yes, sir.

Mr. McGROARTY. Do you hold a position under the Bureau of Indian Affairs?

Mr. CRAWFORD. Yes, sir; I am superintendent of the Klamath Reservation.

Mr. McGROARTY. You are superintendent of the Klamath Reservation and you displaced a white man?

Mr. CRAWFORD. Yes, sir.

Mr. McGROARTY. How long have you been in that position?
Mr. CRAWFORD. A year ago last June I was appointed.
