It is a kind of poetical interpretation of the fate of Thekla which, in the drama itself, is left uncertain. Schiller had sent the verses to his friend Körner, who expressed his great satisfaction at the tone which pervaded them. "They are pathetic," he wrote to the Poet, "and simple withal." Schiller himself was greatly delighted with this praise,,, denn er habe das Gedicht," as he wrote in reply,,, mit Liebe gemacht." A further explanation of the poem will not be necessary for those, who have read through the drama and-understood it.-Editor.
