A SPLENDID LETTER BY THE AUTHOR OF

"JANE EYRE"

21. BRONTE (CHARLOTTE). A. L. s., 9pp. 8vo, July 31, 1848. To W. T. Williams.

AN EXTREMELY FINE AND LONG AUTOGRAPH LETTER, beginning with praise of Ruskin, after reading "Modern Painters." "I am truly obliged to *Mr. Smith for giving me this book, not having often met with one that has pleased me more." She then goes on at great length into the subjects of the Novels written by herself and Sisters. "Permit me to caution you not to speak of my sisters when you write to me. I mean do not use the word in the plural. 'Ellis Bell'-will not endure to be alluded to under any other appellation than the nom de plume. I committed a grand error in betraying his identity to you and Mr. Smith-it was inadvertent-the words 'we are three sisters' escaped me before I was aware

The only glimpses of society I have ever had were obtained in my vocation of governess, and some of the most miserable moments I can recall were passed in drawing rooms full of strange faces," etc.

ONE OF THE FINEST AND MOST INTIMATE LETTERS EVER PENNED BY CHARLOTTE BRONTE.

THE MANUSCRIPT OF "SARDANAPALUS"

32. BYRON (GEORGE GORDON, LORD). Original Autograph Manuscript of "Sardanapalus." Written on 12pp. 4to, and 1442 pp. folio, the smaller leaves inlaid to folio, and bound in full red levant morocco.

COMPLETE MANSCRIPTS BY BYRON ARE VERY RARE. The first page is dated Ravenna, January 13, 1821" and on the last page, which bears his INITIAL SIGNATURE THREE TIMES, and is dated " Ravenna, May 27th, 1821," is the following note:

"Mem.-I began this drama on the 13th of January 1821-and continued the two first acts very slowly and at long intervals.-The last three acts were written since the 13th of May 1821. (this present month) that is to say in a fortnight."

The first 12 pages are the manuscript of the Preface, and the second Appendix to "The Two Foscari," in which Byron defends himself against the charges of plagiarism and of revolutionism. The last page and a half are notes to "Sardanapalus" taken from Mitford's "History of Greece."

The writing of these is so different as to almost lead one to believe them to have been the work of another hand, were it not for certain wellmarked characteristics; but these notes were probably made at a much earlier date, while at the time of writing the Drama, Byron was in an unsettled, highly-strung condition of mind and body, and the writing shows great indecision and haste. It is full of corrections and deletions. The manuscript was the property of John Murray, Byron's publisher, and has his Ex-Libris on the inside of the front cover.

IT CONTAINS NUMEROUS PASSAGES WHICH ARE ENTIRELY UNPUBLISHED, AND IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE MOST IMPORTANT BYRON MANUSCRIPT IN EXISTENCE.

33. A. L. s., 3 pp. 4to. Volage Frigate off Ushant, July 7, 1811. To his publisher Mr. Cawthorn. A little worn in folds, and small hole in one leaf, affecting two words.

***I have been scolding you (like almost all Scolders) without a reason, for I found your two parcels, one at Athens and the other at Malta, on my way down. In a few days on our arrival at Portsmouth, which we expect to make about the 10th I shall send this off... I hope the Satire has answered your purpose, and of course it has mine. I have a poem in the same style and much about the same length; which I intend as a kind of sequel to the former," etc.
