Literary News.

PROFESSOR WILLIAM SMYTH, of the University of Cambridge, expired at Norwich, on the 24th instant, at the advanced age of 85. The admirable "Lectures" of this veteran Professor on Modern History have reached a 5th edition, and, on the French Revolution, a 3d edition. THE Original Drawings, by Maclise, made to illustrate "Moore's Melodies," also some by Jones, the Academician, to illustrate "Moore's" and "James Montgomery's Poems," are announced for sale, by Messrs. Sotheby and Co.

MESSRS. SOUTHGATE & BARRETT have advertised for sale the extensive and curious Library of the late Rev. H. F. Lyte. The sale will occupy seventeen days.

MESSRS. BAGSTER, who have already done so much towards facilitating Biblical studies, now announce as nearly ready a facsimile large print edition of their pocket "Polyglot Bibles," specially prepared for those who are accustomed to their Bibles, and whose sight may require relief. "CURTIS'S BRITISH ENTOMOLOGY" is to be reissued, by Messrs. Reeves, at a considerably reduced price. The work comprehends illustrations and descriptions of the Genera of Insects found in Great Britain and Ireland, with 770 copperplates.

The "Quarterly Review" is announced for publication on Wednesday next; but the publication of the "Edinburgh" is deferred for a few days longer.

THE 5th volume of the Library Edition of "Bishop Thirlwall's History of Greece" is now ready.

Publishers' Circular Office, June 30, 1849.

THE attention of Booksellers especially is requested to the plan successfully adopted by many of Subscribing for a number of copies of the Circular, for distribution amongst their own connexion either in Town or Country. The Circular, comprising a complete list of every work published in Great Britain, independent of the advertisements and announcements, must be interesting to all persons connected with literature; and being stitched in a wrapper, with the Subscriber's Name and Address, combines also the benefit of a private catalogue, and cannot fail being beneficial to the circulator. The charges per dozen copies for one year are extremely moderate, and may be known upon application to the Publisher, who will also be happy to reply to any inquiries upon the subject.
