Literary Aews. The readers of Jeremy Taylor will be interested in learning that the treatise hitherto attributed to him, entitled " Contemplations on the State of Man," has been ascertained to be from another hand; a recently published pamphlet, by Archdeacon Churton, having shewn it to be taken from a work by Nieremberg, a Spanish writer contemporary with Taylor. The “ Contemplations" will, therefore, not be included in the Rev. R. P. Eden's Edition of Jeremy Taylor's Works, now in course of publication in Ten Volumes.

In consequence of the great difficulty in getting the plates in “ The Babes in the Wood" coloured by hand, a new edition, printed in colours by Messrs. Hanhart, is in preparation, and will be issued early in the year.

THE "Shakspere Almanack” for 1849 is certainly a novel idea, and one which brings the beauties of our National Bard into daily use. For each day's particular event a quotation is given bearing upon the subject, and is thus the means of providing a rich compilation, and new views, of “Shakspere's truly English character and genius.”

In the present number of the “Circular” will be found announced new works by two of the most conspicuous men of the present eventful period of the history of France. V Zot has in the press “ Democracy in France (January 1849),” 8vo. announced by Mr. · to be published on the 5th. M. A. de Lamartine has also in the press Raphael ; s from the Book of Life at Twenty;"—this will be published about the 15th. Arrangem made to publish each of these works simultaneously in French and English.
