1. Translate into English

Ἡνίκα δὲ ὁ ξένος εἰς οἶκον ἀπίων ἀνίστατο, εἰπεῖν λέγεται, Οὐκέτι θαυμάζω, ὦ Κῦρε, εἰ ἐκπώματα μὲν καὶ ἱμάτια καὶ χρυσία ἡμεῖς ὑμῶν πλείω κεκτήμεθα, αὐτοὶ δ ̓ ἐλάττονος ὑμῶν ἄξιοί ἐσμεν. Ἡμεῖς γὰρ ἐπιμελούμεθα ὅπως ἡμῖν ταῦτα ὡς πλεῖστα ἔσται, ὑμεῖς δέ μοι δοκεῖτε ἐπιμελεῖσθαι ὅπως αὐτοὶ ὡς κράτιστοι ἔσεσθε.

2. Translate into Greek

(1) The messengers from the camp said that the son of the general was dead.

(2) One sun shines in heaven : one king reigns on earth. Take away the sun, it is night. Take away the king, you have anarchy.

(3) About the same time the mother of the beautiful damsel entered the palace.

(4) If you give your boys all that they want, you will have a quiet house, but ill-mannered children. (5) I hate the physician more than the disease.

3. Translate into English

Ἐπεὶ δὲ ἀπορία ἦν, ἐλυπεῖτο μὲν σὺν τοῖς ἄλλοις, καὶ οὐκ ἐδύνατο καθεύδειν μικρὸν δ ̓ ὕπνου λαχὼν εἶδεν ὄναρ. Εδοξεν αὐτῷ, βροντῆς γενομένης, σκηπτὸς πεσεῖν εἰς τὴν πατρῴαν οἰκίαν, καὶ ἐκ τούτου λάμπεσθαι πᾶσαν. Περίφοβος δ ̓ εὐθὺς ἀνηγέρθη, καὶ τὸ ὄναρ πῆ μὲν ἔκρινεν ἀγαθὸν, (ὅτι, ἐν πόνοις ὢν καὶ κινδύνοις, φῶς μέγα ἐκ Διὸς ἰδεῖν ἔδοξε·) πῆ δὲ καὶ ἐφοβεῖτο, (ὅτι ἀπὸ Διὸς μὲν βασιλέως τὸ ὄναρ ἐδόκει αὐτῷ εἶναι, κύκλῳ δὲ ἐδόκει λάμπεσθαι τὸ πῦρ,) μὴ οὐ δύναιτο ἐκ τῆς χώρας ἐξελθεῖν τῆς βασιλέως, ἀλλ ̓ εἴργοιτο πάντοθεν ὑπό τινων ἀποριῶν.

4. Translate into English

(1) Ἐκεῖναι γὰρ, διὰ τὸ χειροπληθέσι τοῖς λίθοις σφεν δονᾶν, ἐπὶ βραχὺ ἐξικνοῦνται· οἱ δέ γε Ρόδιοι καὶ ταῖς μολυβδίσιν ἐπίστανται χρῆσθαι.

(2) Πάντες μὲν γὰρ οἱ ποταμοί, εἰ καὶ πρόσω τῶν πηγῶν ἄποροι ὦσι, προϊοῦσι πρὸς τὰς πηγὰς διαβατ γίγνονται οὐδὲ τὸ γόνυ βρέχοντες.

(3). ̓Ασκῶν, ἔφη, δισχιλίων δεήσομαι· πολλὰ δὲ ὁρῶ ταῦτα πρόβατα καὶ αἶγας καὶ βοῦς καὶ ὄνους, ἃ ἀποδαρέντα καὶ φυσηθέντα ῥᾳδιώς ἂν παρέχοι τὴν διάβασιν.

(4) Οὗτοι μὲν γὰρ αὐτοὺς ἐπιωρκήκασιν, ἡμεῖς δὲ, πολλὰ ὁρῶντες ἀγαθά, στεῤῥως αὐτῶν ἀπειχόμεθα διὰ τοὺς τῶν θεῶν ὅρκους· ὥστε ἐξεῖναί μοι δοκεῖ ἰέναι ἐπὶ τὸν ἀγῶνα πολὺ σὺν φρονήματι μείζονι ἢ τούτοις.

5. Parse in the above extracts

6. Decline γείτων, δούς, δεσπότης, λακτισθείς, βεβηκώς, φάλαγξ, βέλος, ὄνομα, giving the gender of the

nouns.

Compare πτωχός, αἰσχρός, ὀλίγος, and express in Greek nine, seventeen, sixtieth, three thousand, fifty times.

7. Write out the future indicative of the verb εἰμι (sum), the 2 aor. ind. of ἔρχομαι, the lst aor. ind. act. of τίθημι, the perfect opt. pass. of λύω, also 1 pers. sing. 2 aor. subj. mid. of λείπω, 3rd pers. plu. pres. imp. pass. of ἵστημι, 1 pers. plu. 2nd perf. of πλήσσω, 3rd pers. plu. perf. active of λαμβάνω. Give the principal parts of ἔχω, πάσχω, φθάνω, εὑρίσκω, σώζω, ἀνατείνω.

8. What cases are used in Greek after the prepositions σύν, μετὰ, περὶ, ὑπὸ, and the verbs ἐπιθυμέω, βασιλεύω, κοινωνέω, ἀδικέω, δίδωμι : also what constructions represent the Latin dative with sum; ablative after dignus and indignus, and utor; and gerund in di?

9. Give the meanings of the following expressions:ἀγωνοθέται-ἀμφότερα τὰ ὦτα τετρυπημένον—ὡς μὲν συνελόντι εἰπεῖνοὔτε δηχθεὶς οὔτε λακτισθείς σὺν τῷ πατρῴω φρονήματι-λίθου ξεστοῦ κογχυλιάτου—ἐν τῇ τότε ἀκροβολίσει—ἐνωμοτάρχους-ἄλλως ἐχέτω.

10. Translate into the Greek of Xenophon

Bello Helvetiorum confecto totius fere Galliae legati, principes civitatum, ad Caesarem gratulatum convenerunt: Intellegere sese, tametsi pro veteribus Helvetiorum iniuriis populi Romani ab his poenas bello repetisset, tamen eam rem non minus ex usu terrae Galliae quam populi Romani accidisse, propterea quod eo consilio florentissimis rebus domos suas Helvetii reliquissent, uti toti Galliae bellum inferrent imperioque potirentur locumque domicilio ex magna copia deligerent, quem ex omni Gallia opportunissimum ac fructuosissimum iudicassent, reliquasque civitates stipendiarias haberent.
