All Mr. Lumley's but the Sircingle Filly go into John Day's stable.

By private contract.-Mr. Thelluson, Falcon, to Mr. Meiklam; Mr. Wiley, Eliza Middleton, to Mr. Martinson; Mr. Plummer, his filly foal by Touchstone out of Alice Hawthorne, to Lord John Scott; Mr. C. Peck, The Major, and his colt foal out of The Major's dam, to Mr. John Scott; Mr. Meeson, First Fruits, to Mr. Palmer, of Hednesford; Mr. Hatfield, his brood-mare Florida, by Mulatto, to Mr. Hardy, of Chantilly. The following yearlings, bred by Mr. Stevens, are in John Day's stable:-Eulogist, by Birdcatcher out of Eulogy; Vaultress, by Birdcatcher out of Martha Lynn (dam of Voltigeur); and Milesian, by Birdcatcher out of Virginia. Penthesilia and John Leyden have been shipped for Calcutta.

We have to record the death of Mr. Hibburd, the clerk of the course at Ascot and Goodwood, but yet better known for his talent and character

as a starter, in which capacity he was engaged at nearly all the great meetings. Mr. Hibburd, who was in the fifty-first year of his age, had been suffering from illness for some time. He has left a widow and family, of whom the elder sons are likely to succeed to some of his appointments, having already occasionally acted for him.

The most insipid Leger known for some time has been followed by as unexciting a settling. John Scott's party wanted the confidence to "go the whole hog" to the last, and the gentlemen losers bore their sufferings in becoming silence. To be sure, one or two of the industrious have closed accounts privately; but as this was nothing more than their customers had expected for some time, there has been little affectation of surprise or of indignant denunciation. The winnings on the race go entirely "to a sect," as no horse was perhaps ever less fancied by the public than Newminster after his York performance.

For the Derby we have to report the crack under fresh colours, he having been purchased of Lord John Scott by Mr. Merry, for, it is said, the extraordinary sum of six thousand five hundred! If ever a horse could be worth this, even in the market, Hobby Noble would look so just now-a more even moderate lot than the latest running makes his opponents we never remember. This change of hands has acted anything but prejudicially to his position, the horse having been in great favour all through the month, and at times tiring the layers at the prices quoted-both his present and late owners standing to win very heavy stakes. The advance of Augur and the retirement of the lately formidable Home-brewed, both of course trace back to Doncaster; but it is Eclipse first and the rest nowhere" as yet. The great stables, especially, never roared so like sucking doves; it is to be hoped, however, the October meetings may give a little more zest to this race than we can find in it at present.

Despite the Hernandez and Co. exhibition, the Goodwood Stable has got up another first favourite in Mokanna for the Cesarewitch; Newminster, who is just closing with them, bearing the counter signal of being "a doubtful starter." Our sum-up on this event does not go further back than the Monday following the declarations. The same on the Cambridgeshire, for which, though not first favourite, the game Nancy is to this date the chief object of interest.
