audit the Treasurer's accounts, viz., at the September meeting, and to report thereon at the next March meeting; and the same being accepted, shall be entered by the Recording Secretary on his books.

ART. XVIII. In case of the death, resignation, incapacity or removal out of the county of either of the Secretaries, or the Treasurer, the Trustees shall take charge of the official books, papers, and effects, belonging to the office that may be vacated, and give receipts for the same; which books, papers, &c., they may deliver to some person whom they may appoint to fill the office until the next meeting of the Society, at which time there shall be a choice.

ART. XIX. A committee shall be appointed from time to time, severally to solicit and receive subscriptions for raising a fund to encourage the objects for which the Society has been founded, the improvement of the Agriculture, the Horticulture, and the Manufactures of the county, the same to be sacredly appropriated to these objects only.

ART. XX. All donations made to the Society shall be permanently invested; the income only to be applied to premiums and gratuities, unless specially directed otherwise by the donor.

ART. XXI. Alterations and amendments of the constitution may be made at the annual meeting, with the assent of two-thirds of the members present.

The report of the committee was accepted, and after some little discussion, the constitution was adopted.

The Society then proceeded to the choice of officers. The following named gentlemen were elected for the year ensuing:

This report was accepted and adopted.

The Society then made choice of the following named gentlemen as the Committee of Solicitation:

Voted, That the Secretary be instructed to inform these gentlemen of their appointment, and forward to each a copy of the constitution; and that the Committee of Finance be ordered to allow a commission of five per cent. in the cities of Norwich and New London, and one of ten per cent. in the rest of the county, on all sums collected by them within a period of four weeks from the time of their receiving the notification of their appointment from the Secretary.

Voted, That the Corresponding Secretary be empowered to fill any vacancies that may occur in the Committee of Solicitation.

Voted, To print five hundred copies of the Constitution for the use of the members.

There are now about $300 in the treasury, and much spirit is manifested in procuring an exhibition in the autumn of 1855.

FAIRFIELD

COUNTY AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY.

THIS Society was organized, August 24th, 1840, Hon. Roger M. Sherman, President. The first Fair was held at Danbury, in October, 1841. In 1842, E. Moss White was President, and fairs were held at Danbury and Bridgeport.

The annual fairs from 1843, to 1847, inclusive, were held at Bridgeport. In 1848, it was held in Fairfield. At this time, P. T. Barnum was chosen President, who aided the Society with liberal donations, and excited a renewed interest. Exhibitions were held annually at Bridgeport until 1853, when the town of Stamford raised seven hundred dollars for the benefit of the Society, and six hundred dollars were offered in premiums. A fair was held the 5th, 6th and 7th of October.

With this amount the Society voted to buy a tent to use in place of a hall for exhibitions.

The fourteenth annual meeting of the Fairfield County Agricultural Society, was holden at Norwalk, in accordance with public notice, the 3rd of November, 1853. At 11 o'clock, A. M., John B. Knapp, Esq., took the chair and called the meeting to order. A large number of members were present. Treasurer's report was read and accepted.

Resolved, That each Life Member of the Society, be furnished with a certificate, signed by the President and Secretary.

Resolved, That in consideration of the valuable services heretofore rendered the Society by Messrs. P. T. Barnum, as President; E. Porter, as Treasurer; J. H. Sherwood, as Secretary; R. Brothwell, as Grand Marshal; they, and each, be declared Honorary Life Members of this Society.

Resolved, That the next annual Fair be held in the town. which will subscribe the most money for the benefit of the Society, in proportion to its inhabitants, and that such subscription be sent to the Secretary, on or before the 1st of March, 1854, certified to by the Vice-President of the town sending it.

Resolved, That we appoint a committee to procure a tent, sixty feet wide, by one hundred and fifty feet in length.
