Mr. MOORE acquaints Mariners in general,, that he fells no Sea Books, Inftruments or Charts, but such as may be depended on; and confequently he excludes all those old, inaccurate, and erroneous Charts, the depending upon which has often proved fatal to Shipping and Seamen. Thefe Books, with the Nautical Almanac; 3 s. 6d. are fully fufficient for the Seaman or Teacher's Ufe. The following is extracted from Ayres's Sunday Gazette, March 8, 1789. "On Wednesday laft a Caufe was tried before Lord Kenyon and a Special Jury at Guildhall, wherein Mr. David Steel, a Bookfeller, in Union-Row, Tower-Hill, was Plaintiff, and Mr. John Hamilton Moore, Teacher of Navigation on Tower-Hill, Defendant. The Action was brought to recover 3000l. Damages, alledged by the Plaintiff to have been sustained by him, on Account of the Defendant having published a Chart of the Eaft Coast of England, which the Plaintiff contended had been pirated from two Charts of his, pubJifhed in 1782; when it appeared by the Evidence of Captain John Stevenson, and Mr. Porteus, Pilot, that there were a great many very material Errors in Mr. Steel's Charts, which are corrected in Mr. Moore's. The Jury were prepared to give a Verdict in Favor of Mr. Moore, but were prevented by Mr. Erfkine, the Plaintiff's Counsel, fubmitting to a Non A fimilar Caufe was tried before Lord Mansfield, March 1, 1785, brought by Meffis. Sayer and Bennett, of Fleet-Street, against Mr. Moore, to rel cover 10,000l. Damages, when by the Evidence of Admiral Campbell, and Mr. Wales, (Aftronomer with the late Captain Cook) they were nonfuited, their Charts being conftructed on wrong Principles. The Plaintiffs in each Cause were obliged to pay Mr. Moore's Costs of Suit. JOHN HAMILTON MOORE will be happy to receive Information from every judicious Seaman refpecting the different Places they vifit, in order to compleat his Plan of publishing the moft correct Charts of all Parts of the known World on true Principles, which has never yet been done. |
