IV.

DUM gelido Boreæ video demittere flatu te modo formosum, flos periture, caput; dum quos ver aluit tecum lugere videris

pallidus, et tristi diriguisse gelu;

tum subit ærumnas penitus tolerantis imago qui fata a cunis novit iniqua pati.

Scilicet hunc venti Borealis turbine flexum exiguo incultus munere nutrit ager

at lacrimas almo visu siccabit utrique ætheris alterno vere renatus honor.

V.

HE that loves a rosy cheek,

or a coral lip admires,

or from star-like eyes doth seek fuel to maintain his fires;

as old Time makes these decay, so his flames must waste away.

But a smooth and steadfast mind, gentle thoughts, and calm desires, hearts with equal love combined,

kindle never-dying fires;

where these are not, I despise

lovely cheeks, or lips, or eyes.

V.

Si quem suave rubens gena,

si torret potius coralio labrum,

si stellis oculos pares

ignis surripuit materiem sui;

hæc ætas ubi fregerit,

canos in cineres fax Veneris cadet.

At mens propositi tenax,

et mite ingenium nec nimis appetens,

et fax mutua pectorum,

æternis animos ignibus excitant:

quæ si defuerint, genæ

et nil labra rubent, nil oculi micant.

VI.

GIVER of glowing light,

though but a god of other days,

the kings and sages

of wiser ages

still live and gladden in thy genial rays!

King of the tuneful lyre,

still poets' hymns to thee belong;

though lips are cold

whereon of old

thy beams all turn'd to worshipping and song!

O LUCIS auctor aureæ, quem pristina

ætas verebatur Deum,

te doctioris sæculi reges adhuc

sophique lætis hauriunt

animis benignum. Tu prius testudinis

rex audiebas, nec negant

istum poetæ spiritum, quamquam rigent

quæ te colentium prius

fervore cantus labra reddebant jubar.
