I. Translate and explain :

(1) Ὅθεν καὶ τῶν τεχνῶν γεγόνασιν ἐπιδόσεις παντὸς γὰρ προσθεῖναι τὸ ἐλλεῖπον.

(2) Περὶ δὲ τὸ χαλεπώτερον αἰεὶ καὶ τέχνη γίγνεται καὶ ἀρετή.

(3) Οὐδεὶς ἑκὼν πονηρὸς, οὐδ ̓ ἄκων μάκαρ.

(4) Τυπτόμενοι γὰρ οὐκ ἀφίστανται τῆς νομῆς.

(5) Ἔστι δὲ τῶν δαπανημάτων, οἷα λέγομεν τὰ τίμια.

(6) Ἐπὶ τὸ ἔλαττον δὲ μᾶλλον τοῦ ἀληθοῦς ἀποκλίνει. (7) Οὐ γὰρ δὴ καθεύδειν αὐτοὺς ὑπειλήφασιν, ὥσπερ τὸν Ενδυμίωνα.

(8) Ταῦτα γίγνοιτ' ἂν βιουμένοις κατά τινα νοῦν καὶ τάξιν ὀρθὴν, ἔχουσαν ἰσχύν.

2. Trace the steps by which Aristotle arrives at his definition of the Chief Good': and state the different views of its nature, mentioned in your portion of the Ethics.

3. In Aristotle's system, what relation do pleasure and pain hold to virtue, as tests of its attainment, and its perfection?

4. What mention is made of, and what opinions are attributed to Plato, Solon, Socrates, Anaxagoras, Eudoxus, Anacharsis ?

5. How do Aristotle's views of the sphere of ἡ πολιτική, differ from modern conceptions on that subject? and what does he consider the test of a good πολίτεια ?

6. State and discuss the arguments, that the θεωρητικαὶ ἐνέργειαι are superior to the ἠθικαί. Are they consistent with previous statements?

7. What are the respective advantages of public and of private education, as stated in the Tenth Book?

8. Give Aristotle's views, as collected from the Ethics, on the nature of the Divine Being, suicide, the state of the dead, the proper motive to virtue.

9. Describe the following:-μεγαλοπρέπεια, πραότης, εὐτραπελία, αἰδώς, νέμεσις, μεγαλοψυχία, ειρωνεία, βωμόλοχος, φαντασία.

10. Οθεν καὶ ἀπορεῖται ποτερόν ἐστι μαθητὸν, ἢ ἐθιστὸν, ἢ ἄλλως πως ἀσκητόν, ἢ κατά τινι, θεῖαν μοῖραν, ἢ καὶ διὰ τύχην παραγίνεται.

(2) Τούτων ὢν τῶν ἑπτὰ ἐθνέων αἱ λοιπαὶ πόλις, πάρεξ τῶν κατέλεξα, ἐκ τοῦ μέσου ἐκατέατο.

(3) Τὴν δὲ Σάμον ἐπιστέατο δόξῃ καὶ Ἡρακλέας στήλας ἴσον ἀπέχειν.

(4) Πλεῖστον γάρ σφεας ἐδηλέετο ἡ ἐσθῆς, ἐρῆμος ἐοῦσα ὅπλων· πρὸς γὰρ ὁπλίτας ἐόντες γυμνῆτες ἀγῶνα ἐποιεῦντο.

(5) Επιλεξάμενος ἄνδρας τε τοὺς κατεστεῶτας τριηκοσίους, καὶ τοῖσι ἐτύγχανον παῖδες ἐόντες.

2. Sketch the career and character of Themistocles.

3. What legendary or romantic elements does Herodotus mix up with the history of the Persian war?

4. What Greeks medized or were neutral, and for what reasons ?

5. Show from the narrative of the war what were the most defensible places in Greece, and give a geographical description of them.

6. What is related of Eurybiades, Amompharetus, Mardonius, Artemisia, Amestris ?

7. What were the relative merits of Sparta and Athens in determining the result of the war?

4. Describe, or draw a map of Syracuse: and give an account of the operations before it.

5. Where are the following places? What events are connected with them? Cumae, Leontini, Tifata, Arpi, Casilinum, Tarentum, Hamae, Apollonia, Clastidium.
