PART I. INTRODUCTORY CHAPTER. THE numerous friends of my beloved husband expressed, in their letters of sympathy, an anxious desire for some account of the last stage of his earthly pilgrimage. To have complied with their request, and written to them individually, would have been as impossible as painful; therefore the only way of gratifying them, was, that of drawing up a short memorial of the last few months of his valuable life, to circulate amongst them; and this is all I intended doing, feeling perfectly assured that his public character was well known.
