his plans, it was considered right to give the whole of the circumstances as they really were, and thus to free him from the charge of haste or imprudence.

It may seem, on the other hand, that the occasions in which he stood forth as a champion for the truth, or an advocate in the cause of missions, and the propagation of the Word of God throughout the world, are not made sufficiently prominent ; but, from the whole tenor of the Memoir, it is apparent that he was ever found at his post, as occasions called him forth. His duties were interwoven with his life. His character was,-to be useful without parade, and to do things without recording them.

In the persuasion that those who knew him best, and loved him most, will be satisfied with the simple narrative of facts, and in the full conviction that such a narrative is in unison with the character of the departed as drawn out in the last few months of his sojourn here, this little work is sent forth ; and to the Master whom he served so faithfully, and who honoured his labours so abundantly, it is now commended, in the humble hope that it will receive his blessing.

The literary part of his character having been kindly undertaken by one of his literary friends, a

full confidence is entertained that that portion of the work will meet with a warm reception from many of those for whom he felt an affectionate regard to the close of life, and who will doubtless follow him through his arduous career with deep interest.
