IN writing this treatise, the chief aim has been to supply a cheap work, which shall contain accurate information for the artisan and student, as well as for those who have already made considerable progress in their studies. Hitherto the works on this subject have been few, expensive, and cumbersome, while their contents are more collections of worked problems (similar to the Science Examination Series) than treatises on the principles of Geometry. Our endeavour has been to show the principles of construction, as in all examinations the candidate should look forward to having problems placed before him, the solutions of which depend upon his intimate knowledge of Geometry and not of particular problems. Those who belong to classes in "Geometry," in connection with the Science and Art Department, will find this work particularly adapted to their requirements-Part I. for the elementary stage; Part II., or the complete work, for the advanced. It is hoped that, with a little assistance from the teacher, the student may, by studying the complete work, obtain a thorough knowledge of the subject, and be thus prepared for the “honours stage."
