THIRTEEN BATF PRESS RELEASES ANNOUNCING NAMES OF WINES FOUND TO BE CONTAMINATED WITH DEG and batf's DECEMBER 1985 MASTER LIST ATF SAYS AUSTRIAN WINE MAY CONTAIN TRACES OF ANTI-FREEZE Washington - Some Austrian wines sold in the United States and 1983 Illmitzen Felsonecker Beerenauslese All three wines are bottled and shipped by Ferdinand Pieroth, Gmbh, Burg Layen, West Germany. Higgins warned people not to drink the wine, cautioning that diethylene glycol may cause nausea, kidney dysfunction or death when ingested in certain quanitities. He added that ATF is taking several steps to ensure that Austrian wine is safe to drink: 1) ATF and Customs are requiring a complete laboratory analysis of all Austrian wine for diethylene glycol before it enters the United States; 2) To make sure that Austrian wine already in the United States does not contain diethylene glycol, wholesalers and importers are being asked to withhold Austrian wines from sale pending laboratory tests. -2 Austrian wines found to contain the anti-freeze will be considered mislabeled and not eligible for sale in the United States. Any wholesaler or importer who sells Austrian wines after July 18, 1985 without having the wines thoroughly tested could have his or her permit suspended or revoked. Additional alerts will be issued when and if more information Washington - Stephen E. Higgins, Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) today urged consuriers not to drink any Austrian wines because of traces of diethylene glycol, a chemical used in anti-freeze were found in additional brands. In addition, Director Higgins recommends that retailers not sell any Austrian wines that have not been tested. Retailers should check with their suppliers to ensure that current stocks and any future shipments are tested. The wines must be tested by independent labs either certified by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) or appropriate state or local agencies. Since July 18, ATF has taken several steps to ensure that Austrian wine is safe to drink: 1) ATF and the U.S. Customs Service are requiring a complete laboratory anaylsis of all Austrian wine before it enters the United States; 2) wholesalers and importers are being asked to withhold Austrian wines from sale pending laboratory tests.
