Underes THE LITERATURE OF MUSIC BY JAMES E. MATTHEW AUTHOR OF "A MANUAL OF MUSICAL HISTORY' LONDON ELLIOT STOCK, 62, PATERNOSTER ROW ES Musiciens lisent peu," said one whose works on Music have been, by the irony of fate, more often reprinted than those of any other writer on the subject. If there is any truth in this proposition (and the writer is very far from adopting it), assuredly it is from no lack of books on the subject. The Literature of Music is large, and rapidly increasing. The late C. F. Becker, in a Bibliography brought down to the year 1839, was able to give upwards of 6,500 tilles, a number which, since that time, has of course been enormously added to. The Wagner literature alone forms a large library! Of the principal national libraries |
