NOTE. The forms for the open beam, Problem XVI. Class (G) being precisely the same as those for the grooved beam in this problem, with the exception of the parenthetical expression, it seems unnecessary to give separate rules for the calculation; and the more especially as the fractional number is always supposed to be given.

The formulæ for the principal cases of torsion being the same as those for the corresponding cases of transverse strength, the rules which apply to the several cases of the one are equally applicable to the corresponding cases of the other, provided that the letter r be substituted for 7 in each of them: for this reason we refrain from giving the rules for the resistance to torsion; and we may further observe, that the useful practical cases of compression and tension being expressed by equations of such a simple form, it seems needless to give rules in words for their solution, we therefore omit them.
