4. If a man can build 7 feet of a wall in a day, what length of wall should be built by 3 men in five days?

GRAMMAR.

1. Prepositions may be divided into three classes :Simple, derived, phrase-prepositions. Give examples of

each class.

"Labour is rest from the sorrows that greet us,
Rest from all petty vexations that meet us,
Rest from sin-promptings that ever entreat us:
Work, and pure slumbers shall wait on thy pillow;
Work, thou shalt ride over care's coming billow."

(a) Parse all the pronouns in the above passage. (b) Point out the prepositions, and show what words they connect.

GEOGRAPHY.

1. Draw a map of the basin of the Thames, showing distinctly its boundaries, the tributaries on each bank, and the towns which stand on it. At what point does it become a tidal river? Explain fully the words printed in italics. What other word is sometimes used instead of tributary? Which is the more appropriate?

2. Trace the journey of a traveller from Paris to Madrid, noting rivers, mountains, and important towns, and describing each as fully as you can.

3. Describe the kingdom of Greece as fully as you can, and say what you know about its history. In what other country are Greeks found in great numbers?

If you like, you may draw a map of Greece, instead of that in Q. 1.

HISTORY.

1. Give the dates of the accession of James I., the death of Charles I., the restoration of Charles II., and the flight of James II.; or, dates of the kings named.

2. Write out a list of our Sovereigns from Edward I. to Edward IV., with dates.

3. What Sovereigns were reigning in the years 800, 872, 1017, 1043, and 1067 ?

"A beggar, who had tried many ways of increasing his finances, at last hit on the plan of pretending to be dumb. A gentleman who was passing by knew the beggar by sight, and, going up to him, asked him promptly, Pray, how long have you been dumb?' The beggar was taken unawares, and had no time to decide on not speaking, and answered quickly, 'From my earliest youth. Sudden or startling events seem to give the mind, as it were, a good shaking, and the truth comes out in spite of ourselves."

3. Express the sum of +188+7, and the difference of 4 and 18, as decimals.

4. What fraction of a guinea, together with ∙0125 of a crown, is equal to £1?

5. Express of 15 of a mile in French metres, taking 32 metres as equal to 35 yards.

Females.

1. If a man earn £17 6s. in 102 days, how long will he be in earning 50 guineas?

2. The annual poor's rates on a net rental of £365 7s. 3d. amount to £36 8s. 9d.; what should be the net rental of an estate for which the poor's rates amount to £24 5s. 10d. per annum?

3. A town which is defended by 1200 men with provisions enough to sustain them 42 days, supposing each man to receive 18 oz. a day, obtains an increase of 200 men to its garrison; what must now be the allowance to each man, in order that the provisions may serve the whole garrison for 54 days?

GRAMMAR.

1. How may prepositions always be distinguished from adverbs? Give examples of prepositions that are sometimes used as adverbs.

2. Show what rules and concords are violated in the following:

The boy and girl was going.

This is the boy which I named.

This is the horse whom I bought.

The room, whose ventilation is imperfect, is unhealthy. 3. Parse all the pronouns, verbs, and adverbs in the following:

"He was always cool and determined, and what he said had to be done, and they knew it; but his way with his men was so frank and kind, and he was so ready to be the foremost in daring and enduring, that there was almost nothing that they would not do for him."

GEOGRAPHY.

1. "Mountain and river-systems form the natural divisions of a country." Explain this statement, and give the exact force of the word "system." What are the natural divisions," according to this, of England and Wales, France, Italy, and Turkey?

2. Draw a map of the coast line from Cape Spartivento to Cape Matapan, marking also the Ionian Islands, and Sicily and Crete.

3. Which country of Europe has the strongest natural boundary, and which has the weakest? Describe each of them as fully as you can, and mention any facts of history which you remember in illustration of this point.

HISTORY.

1. Write out a list of our Sovereigns during the ninth century, with dates.

2. Give the dates and successors of Henry I., John, and Richard II.

3. Name our Sovereigns from Charles II. to George II., with dates.

5. Find the average of the following daily barometric readings: 29.9; 30·1; 30·145; 29.93; 29.01; and 28.89. Give the answer in vulgar and decimal fractions.

Females.

1. I received £754 5s. for goods which cost £800; what was the loss per cent.?

2. Two pieces of cloth of the same quality contain 54 and 63 yds., and the longer is worth £1 7s. more than the shorter what is the value of a third piece containing 120 yds.?

3. If 6 compositors set up a work of 6 sheets in 10 days, in what time will 4 compositors set up a work of 12 sheets?

4. If 8 men earn £9 wages for 5 days' work, how much would 32 men earn for 24 days' work at the same rate?

GRAMMAR.

1. Point out and parse the pronouns in the following: :"O still I've worn

Through danger, frenzy, and despair;

It once was bright and clear as thine,

But blood and tears have dimmed its shine."

2. What are the two forms of the possessive case of I, thou, we, you? How do you determine which is to be used?

3. Enumerate the prepositions that express relations of space, and, if you can, classify them.

GEOGRAPHY.

1. Draw a map of the basin of the Rhone, marking clearly its tributaries and boundaries.

2. Describe fully the physical features and present condition of Italy, and the islands belonging to it. Say also how it was divided thirty years ago, and mention and describe the cities which were then capitals of different portions of it.

3. What are the Great Powers of Europe? How is it that they are stronger than others? Name and describe their capitals.

HISTORY.

1. Among the kings who reigned in Britain between 800 and 1066, give names and dates of the four whom you think most remarkable.

2. Write down the dates of Stephen, John, Elizabeth, and Anne; and name their immediate successors.

3. Name the Sovereigns who were reigning in 1155, 1273, 1414, and 1510.
