Attendance on the Classes of Botany counts as a full Course for the M.A., First B.Sc., and First M.B., Ch.B., Examinations. Students taking Botany as a Second B.Sc. or Honours M.A. subject are recommended to begin their study during the Summer Session, as greater facilities are naturally at hand for the study of Systematic Botany.

ANATOMY.

Lecturer-James Musgrove, M.D., F.R.C.S. Eng. and Ed.

1. The Dissecting-room is open daily from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. for senior and junior students.

2. The Anatomical Museum of mounted dissections, models, and specimens is open daily to members of the Class.

3. Special lectures and demonstrations will be given at One o'clock on various subjects, including: (a) Development; (b) Brain and Organs of special sense; (c) Joints; (d) Regional Anatomy.

The above course, which is open to male and female students, qualifies for the Medical and Surgical Degrees of St Andrews and the other Scottish Universities, as well as for the Examining Boards of Edinburgh and London.

MATERIA MEDICA AND THERAPEUTICS.

Lecturer-W. H. de Wytt, M.B. et C.M.

The Summer Courses will consist of instruction in Practical Materia Medica, Practical Pharmacy, Dispensing and Compounding Medicines, Drug-testing, Prescription-writing, Prescriptionreading, Posology. The above courses are open to male and female Students, and qualify for Graduation in Medicine in the University of St Andrews, and the other Scottish Universities, as well as for the Examining Boards at London and Edinburgh. They also prepare for the Examination for the Certificate to act as Assistant in Compounding and Dispensing Medicines. The Classes are open to Pharmaceutical Students, and will be found advantageous to ladies about to train as nurses.

PHYSIOLOGY.

Lecturer-Alice M. Umpherston, L.R.C.P.S.

A Practical Class of at least 50 meetings will be held daily during the summer session. The Course will include Physiological Chemistry, Histology of Tissues and Organs, and the use of certain Physiological Instruments.

BURSARIES.

These are derived from the annual proceeds of funds which have been mortified for the benefit of Students, from time to time, since the foundation of the University.

The number of Bursaries attached to the United College is over one hundred, varying in value from about £5 to £50 per

annum.

Bursaries Open to Competition.

FOUNDATION.

Founded in 1458 by Bishop Kennedy, and regulated by Ordinance No. 71 of the Scottish Universities Commission of 1889. The number of Bursaries is fifteen-five of the annual value of £20 each and ten of the annual value of £10 each. The whole of these Bursaries are open by competition to all students entering on their first session of attendance in the United College, and are tenable for four years, provided that if the holders graduate after the three years' course, they shall only retain their Bursaries during the fourth year of tenure if they shall engage in a course of study approved by the Senatus Academicus in subjects included in the curriculum for Degrees in Arts or in Pure Science.

YEAMAN AND GRAY.

A Bursary was founded in 1669 by Dr Alexander Yeaman, Dundee, and two Bursaries were founded in 1808 by Dr John Gray, Paddington. By Ordinance No. 75 of the Scottish Universities Commission of 1889 these three Bursaries were conjoined so as to form two Bursaries, to be called the Yeaman and Gray Bursaries—the holder of each to receive one half of the free annual income of the Yeaman Foundation, together with £10 from the income of the Gray Foundation. These Bursaries are tenable for four years, provided that if the holders graduate after the three years' course, they shall only retain their Bursaries during the fourth year of tenure if they shall engage in a course of study approved by the Senatus Academicus in subjects included in the curriculum for Degrees in Arts or in Pure Science. The annual value of each Bursary is about £12, 158.

STUART.

Two Bursaries were founded in 1811, by the Rev. James Stuart, formerly Rector of George Town and All Saints, South Carolina, and Chaplain to the King's Rangers in North America. By Ordinance No. 73 of the Scottish Universities Commission

of 1889 these two Bursaries were conjoined into one, the holder of which shall receive annually, during his tenure thereof, the whole of the free income of the said foundation, amounting to about £12.

The Bursary is open to competition by all students, without preference as to name, entering on their first session of attendance in the United College, and is tenable for four years and no longer, provided that if the holder graduate after the three years' course, he shall only retain his Bursary during the fourth year of tenure if he shall engage in a course of study approved by the Senatus Academicus in subjects included in the curriculum for Degrees in Arts or in Pure Science.

PYPER.

Founded in 1863 by Professor William Pyper of the United College. One Bursary of the annual value of about £10, 10s., tenable for four years.

BRUCE.

Three Bursaries of the annual value of £30 each, founded in 1865 by Mrs Tyndall Bruce of Falkland, out of respect to the memory of her uncle, John Bruce, Esq. of Grangehill and Falkland. These Bursaries, of which the patronage is vested in the Senatus Academicus, are to be conferred, after competitive examination, on Students who are about to enter on the course of study usual for the second year in the literary classes of the University, and are tenable for three years. It is provided that no person shall hold any of the said Bursaries, along with any other Bursary, or any appointment yielding to him an annual income of £30 or upwards. One Bursary falls vacant in each year.

BAXTER.

Founded in 1867 by Sir David Baxter, Bart. of Kilmaron. Two Bursaries of the annual value of about £16 each, and tenable for two years. These Bursaries are to be conferred, after competitive examination, on Students who are entering on their third year of attendance at the United College, and who shall be in bona fide attendance on at least two Classes in the College during the tenure of their Bursary. It is provided that no person shall hold any of the said Bursaries along with any other Bursary or Scholarship in the University. One Bursary falls vacant in each

year.

CHEAPE.

Two Bursaries of the annual value of £22 each, or thereby, founded in 1868 by George Clerk Cheape, Esq. of Strathtyrum.

These Bursaries will be conferred by the Senatus Academicus, after competitive examination, on Students who are about to enter on the course of study usual for the second year in the literary classes of the University. The Bursaries are tenable for three years, and for other three years provided the Bursars pass the examinations required for the Degree of M.A., and proceed to the study of Divinity in St Mary's College.

DUNCAN.

Founded in 1868 by Miss Duncan, Edengrove. Two Bursaries of the annual value of £12, or thereby, open to two Students attending the Literary and Theological Curriculum, and tenable during the ordinary course of study at the University,-preference being given to the Founder's kin or name.

ENDOWMENT ASSOCIATION.

This Bursary was founded in 1876 by the St Andrews University Additional Endowment Association. The annual value is about £15. It is tenable during the Student's course at the United College, and thereafter at St Mary's College.

NEW ENDOWMENT ASSOCIATION.

The new Association for the better endowment and extension of the University of St Andrews (1877) has founded one Bursary of about £14, open to competition by Students who are entering the University for the first time. This Bursary is to be held meanwhile by yearly tenure.

PATRICK KIDD.

This Scholarship or Bursary, of the annual value of about £31, was founded in 1877 by the late Mrs Ann Kidd or Bell, in memory of her father, Patrick Kidd, Esq.

The Scholarship shall be awarded to a Student entering on his Arts course in the University who, by passing the examination for Students who wish to begin their course with the classes of the second year, has qualified for graduation on a three years' course, and undertakes so to graduate.

The Scholarship shall be tenable for the three years of the Student's Arts course at the University; but it shall be in the option of a Student to substitute for the third year of his Arts course an annus medicus at the University of St Andrews, in which case the regulation as to graduation in Arts will not

be imperative; but the Student, after the completion of his Medical curriculum, will be expected to take the Degree of M.D.

The Scholarship shall be awarded like an ordinary entrance Bursary on the result of the general Bursary Competition at the United College.

In cases of equality, the preference shall be given to a Student from the parish of Mains and Strathmartine, whom failing, to one from the town of Dundee.

The Kidd Scholar shall be subject to the same rules of discipline as a foundation Bursar of the United College, and may be deprived of his Scholarship should his conduct and diligence cease to satisfy the United College.

These rules and regulations are subject to alteration and amendment from time to time by the Senatus Academicus.

WILLIAM BYERS.

This Scholarship or Bursary, of the annual value of about £34, was founded in 1878 by the late Mrs William Byers, in memory of her husband. The following are the conditions of tenure :

1. The Scholarship shall not be awarded to any Student who has not passed the Preliminary Examination, or its equivalents, for entrance into the University.

2. Preference will be given to a Student who may be a native of Mains and Strathmartine, or who shall have received his primary education at the Public Schools of that Parish, and his secondary education at the High School, Harris, or Morgan Academy, or Liff Road School, Dundee ; and in the event of there being more than one Student so qualified, the Scholarship shall be awarded to the one who takes the highest place at the general Bursary Competition at the United College.

3. Application for the Bursary shall be made to the Trustees on or before the 1st September of the year in which a vacancy has occurred. In the event of no Candidate qualified as in Rule 2 appearing, the Trustees may request the United College to award the Scholarship as an entrance Bursary at the general Bursary Competition.

4. The Scholarship, whether awarded by the Trustees or by the United College, shall ordinarily be held by a Student who is proceeding to graduation at the close of three years during the three years of his Arts course at the University of St Andrews, provided his conduct and diligence during that time be such as to satisfy the Senatus Academicus and the Trustees; but the Trustees may in special circumstances continue it for a fourth year, or, in the case of a Student qualified under Rule 2 who is
