EDITOR'S PREFACE

TO THE

FIFTH EDITION.

THE "Elements of Land Surveying," by the late Mr. Abraham Crocker, is a book well known to the public, having already gone through four editions. A few months ago an application was made to me (through the suggestions of a friend, whose name I feel it to be an honour to myself here to introduce*) by Messrs. Longman and Co., the present proprietors of the work, together with proposals, which were eventually accepted, to undertake the task of thoroughly revising and fitting it for an entirely new edition.

The very extensive circulation which Mr. Crocker's treatise has unquestionably obtained, sufficiently shows that it has long been regarded by the public as possessing, at least, the merit of being superior to any other work on the same subject; although the practical part of the science of Land Surveying, as is well known to persons connected with the profession, is very imperfectly
