And there is too a hell beneath,
Where sinners dwell in woe.

There is no other way,
But Jesus' sacrifice,

Whereby our spirits e'er can reach
The glories of the skies.

Oh, send thy Spirit down
On us assembled here;

That all, o'ercome by mercy, may
Believe, repent, and fear.

PSALM CXxii. 1.

T is the Sabbath of the Lord,

IT

It is the hour to hear his word,

It is the day by mercy given,

L. M.

To cheer with tidings brought from heaven.

2 It is the time in which we may
Disburden our full hearts and
pray;
Confess our sins, our guilt deplore,
And ask for grace to sin no more.
3 It is the time which God hath set
To bless the few together met;
Met in his holy house to bring
Our new and heartfelt offering.

4 It is the time when Jesus' call
Breathes out its tender love to all,
Proclaims the captive soul's release,
And gives the pardoned sinner peace.

266 PSALM XCVII. 1.-xcix. 1. REVELATION xix. 6. L. M.
EHOVAH reigns, his throne is high,
His robes are light and majesty;
His glory shines, with beams so bright,
No mortal can sustain the sight.

2 His terrors keep the world in awe,
His justice guards the holy law,
His love restores our fallen race,
His truth and promise seal the grace,
3 Through all his works his wisdom shines,
And baffles Satan's deep designs ;
His power is sovereign to fulfil
The noblest counsels of his will.
4 And will this glorious Lord descend,
To be our Father and our Friend?
Then let us serve with all our powers,
And sing with joy This God is ours.

PSALM XC.

EHOVAH, thou the eternal God,
Hast been thy children's safe abode ;
Their refuge, through the ages past,
Their hope while time itself shall last.
2 Before the mountains had their birth,
Before thy hands had formed the earth,
From everlasting thou, supreme,
Art God, to endless years the same.
3 But man, to whom thou gavest breath,
At thy command sinks down to death;

L. M.

Thou say'st" Return, ye sons of men,"
And man returns to dust again.

4 Like grass he springs, at morn 'tis seen
Arrayed in verdure fresh and green;
Like grass cut down his glories fade,
And wither ere the evening shade.

HEBREWS xii. 22-24.

ERUSALEM, our happy home,
Name to us ever dear,

When will our labors end, and we
Within thy gates appear?

C. M.

2 There happier bowers than Eden's bloom, Nor sin nor sorrow know;

Blessed seats, through rude and stormy scenes, We onward press to you.

3 Why should we shrink at pain and woe,
Or feel at death dismay,

With Canaan's goodly land in view,
And realms of endless day?

4 Apostles, martyrs, prophets there,
Around the Saviour stand;
And soon our friends in Christ below,
Will join the glorious band.

5 Jerusalem, our happy home,
Name to us ever dear,

When will our labors end, and we
Within thy gates appear?

JOHN XV. 4. HEBREWS xii.

1

JESUS, as long as life shall last,

We would be wholly thine;

And when our earthly course is past,
With thee in glory shine.

2 Not on our wisdom we depend,
Not on our strength rely;

But trust that thou unto the end,
Wilt grace and strength supply.

C. M.

3 Oh, guide us through each dangerous snare, And keep us in thy ways;

Each sorrow may we meet by prayer,
Each joy receive with praise.

PSALM XXXii. 8.

JESUS, at thy command
We launch into the deep,
And leave our native land,
Where sin lulls all asleep :

For thee we would the world resign,
And still be found with thee and thine.

Though rocks and quicksands deep,
Through all our passage lie,

Yet thou will safely keep,

And guide us with thine eye;
With thee for ever by our side,

We shall each boisterous storm outride.

Whene'er becalmed we lie,
And all our storms subside,

6. 8.

Then to our succour fly,

And still in mercy guide:

For more the treacherous calm we dread, Than tempests bursting o'er our head.

4 By faith we see the land

Where we shall find our home;
Let hope our sails expand,

And thou blessed Spirit come,
To bear us to that heavenly shore,

Where winds and waves distress no more.

[blocks in formation]

JESUS, enthroned at God's right hand,

To whom a name is given,

A name surpassing every name,
That's known in earth or heaven,

2 Jesus, who in the form of God,
Didst equal honor claim,

Yet to redeem our guilty souls,

Did stoop to death and shame,

3 Oh, may that mind in us be formed,
Which shone so bright in thee,

A humble, meek, and lowly mind,
From pride and envy free.

4 May we to others stoop and learn
To emulate thy love;

So shall we bear thy image here,
And share thy throne above.
