MATTHEW Xviii. 19, 20.

MEETING Jesus in thy name,

At the throne of grace we bow;
Saviour, we thy promise claim,
Be with us and bless us now.

2 Thou hast said, if two agree,
God wilt hear united prayer,
For wherever two or three
Gather, thou art with them there.
3 Firm thy promise doth remain,
Thou art faithful, kind, and true;
We can never ask in vain,
Though our numbers be but few.
4 May thy Spirit, gracious Lord,
Teach us how and what to pray ;
Then the strength and grace afford,
Which we supplicate to day.

1 CORINTHIANS ix. 25

1 MEN of this world for worldly gain
Will labor, watch, and strive;

Yet we who have a heaven to attain,
How negligent we live.

2 We, for whom God the Son came down,
And labored for our good,

How careless to secure that crown,
He purchased with his blood.

3 Lord, thou art nigh, though we are weak, Oh, to thy servants come;

[ocr errors]

And make us stedfastly to seek
Our bright celestial home.

JAMES ii. 20.

GALATIANS V. 16.

JOHN xiv. 21.-xv. 14.

C. M.

ISTAKEN souls, that dream of heaven,
And boast of joys within,

Of hope, and trust, and guilt forgiven,
While they are slaves to sin.

2 Vain are our fancy's airy flights,
If faith be cold and dead;
None but a living faith unites
To Christ, the living Head.
3 'Tis faith that changes all the heart,
"Tis faith that works by love;
That makes the love of sin depart,
And lifts the thoughts above.

4 Faith must obey her Father's will,
As well as trust his grace;

A pardoning God is jealous still,
For his own holiness.

5 When from the curse he sets us free,
He makes our nature clean;

Nor would he send his Son to be
The minister of sin.

Y dear Redeemer, and my Lord, I read my duty in thy word; But, in thy life, it best appears, Drawn out in living characters.

2 Such was thy truth, and such thy zeal, Such deference to thy Father's will, Such love, and meekness so divine,

I would transcribe and make them mine. 3 Cold mountains and the midnight air, Witnessed the fervor of thy prayer; The desert thy temptations knew, Thy conflict, and thy victory too. 4 Be thou my pattern; make me bear More of thy gracious image here ; Then God, the Judge, shall own my name Among the followers of the Lamb.

MY

ISAIAH li. 12.

Y Father, O my Father, hear!
Thy poor unworthy child,

It is in Jesus I draw near,

In Jesus reconciled:

Bow down thine ear, my Father, bow,
No one can comfort me, but thou.
2 My Father, O my Father, hear,
In him I venture nigh,

Who on the cross my sorrows bare,
Who feels whene'er I sigh:

Bow down thine ear, my Father, bow,
No one can comfort me, but thou.
3 My Father, O my Father, hear,
Rough is my thorny road;

Yet if I weep, ah, let no tear
Repine against my God:

P. M.

Bow down thine ear, my Father, bow,
No one can comfort me, but thou.
4 My Father, O my Father, hear,
This fickle heart control;
And let no idol love be there,
Oh, sanctify the whole :

Bow down thine ear, my Father, bow,
No one can comfort me, but thou.
5 My Father, O my Father, hear,
Subdue this self in me ;

Let nought that's dear, however dear,
Be dear compared with thee:
Bow down thine ear, my Father, bow,
No one can comfort me, but thou.
6 My Father, O my Father, hear,
Possess me with thy love;
May I but glorify thee here,
Then live with thee above:

Bow down thine ear, my Father, bow.
No one can comfort me, but thou.

MY

2 CORINTHIANS vi. 18.

Y God, my Father, blissful name!
Oh, may I call thee mine?

May I, with sweet assurance, claim
A portion so divine?

2 This can my every fear control,
And bid my sorrows fly;

What harm can ever reach my soul,
Beneath my Father's eye?

C. M.

3 Whate'er thy providence denies,
I calmly would resign ;

For thou art good, and just, and wise,
Lord, bend my will to thine.

4 Whate'er thy sacred will ordains,
Give me the strength to bear;
Oh, let me know my Father reigns,
And trust thy tender care.

5 Thy sovereign ways are all unknown
To my weak erring sight;
Yet let my soul, adoring, own
That all thy ways are right.

[blocks in formation]

1 MY soul, bless the Lord,

The Glorious, the Great,

By angels adored,

And seated in state;
The broad ocean under,
The sky o'er him cast,
He speaks in the thunder,
He walks on the blast!
2 All creatures on earth
Upon him await;

He gave them their birth,
He gives them their date:
To him as a Father

For nurture they cry;
He gives and they gather,
Withholds, and they die.
