MATTHEW Xviii, 3, 4.-xix. 14.

QUIST, Lord, each froward heart,

Make us teachable and mild,
Upright, simple, free from art,
Each one, as a weaned child;
From distrust and envy free,
Pleased with all that pleases thee.
2 What thou shalt to-day provide,
Let us, as a child, receive;
What to-morrow may betide
Calmly to thy wisdom leave;
'Tis enough that thou wilt care,
Why should we the burden bear?
3 As a little child relies

On a care beyond his own,
Knows he's neither strong nor wise,
Fears to stir a step alone,
Let us thus with thee abide,
As our Father, Guard, and Guide,
4 Thus preserved from Satan's wiles,
Safe from dangers, free from fears,
May we have thy gracious smiles,
Till the promised hour appears,
When the sons of God shall prove
All their Father's boundless love.

JOHN iii. 16, 17. ROMANS v. 8.
1 JOHN iv. 8-10.

RAISE your triumphant songs
For God has given his Son;

Let earth proclaim with all her tongues,
What love divine hath done.

7's.

S. M.

2

Sing how the God of grace

His best-beloved chose;

And bade him raise our wretched race
From their abyss of woes.

3

His hand no thunder rolls,

No terror clothes his brow;

He hath no bolts to drive our souls

To fiercer flames below.

4 'Twas mercy filled the throne, And wrath stood silent by,

When Christ was sent with pardons down
To rebels doomed to die.

5 No longer, sinners, rove,
Let hopeless sorrow cease;
Bow to the sceptre of his love,
And take the offered peace.

6 Lord Jesus, make them bow:
Yield to thy sovereign claim
Accept thy great salvation now
And love and bless thy name.

REVELATION vii. 9-17.

L. M.

1 RANSOMED from hell, by grace renewed,

vast uncounted multitude,

Once doomed to die, but now forgiven,
Surround the throne of God in heaven.

2 Gathered to bliss from every land,
Of every name and tribe they stand,

3

Clothed in white robes, with victor palms, And utter their triumphant psalms:

66 Salvation be to God alone

Ascribed, who sits upon the throne;
And to the Son who bore our shame;
Glory to God and to the Lamb."

4 "Blessing and glory, power and might,
Be to our God, they are his right;
Blessing and Glory, might and power,
Be to our God for evermore."

5 These out of fiery trials came,

The faithful servants of the Lamb;
These are the saints beloved of God,
Who washed their robes in Jesus' blood.
6 Therefore before the throne they stand,
Through him they have their bliss attained;
And God, who sits upon the throne,
Accepts them for his sake alone.

7 God will with them for ever dwell,
The heirs of heaven, the saved from hell;
And they before him day and night,
Serve him with ever new delight.

8 Hunger they ne'er shall feel again,
Nor thirst, nor care, nor any pain;
The Lamb who did for them atone,
Has called them to his Father's throne.

9 He will his flock for ever feed,
And unto living pastures lead;

They know no wants, they feel no fears,
And God hath wiped away their tears.
10 Oh, if we wear that spotless robe,
By Jesus wrought, on saints bestowed;
We too, like them, shall one day sing
In heaven the glories of our King.

PSALM CX.

L. M.

1 REDEMPTION'S holy work was done;

[ocr errors]

The Saviour back from earth returned; The Father hailed his conquering Son, And gave the crown he well had earned: "Ascend" he cried "and share my throne," "Ascend and make all hearts thy own.' 2" Ascend and fill thy native seat, Eternal Prophet, Priest and King; While foes lie prostrate at thy feet, And friends their free-will offerings bring, And converts at thy word are born, As plenteous as the dews of morn." 3 Messiah hears, ascends his throne, Begins his mediatorial reign;

He claims the nations for his own,
He calls the world to God again;
And pleads with him his promise past,
That men shall be restored at last,
4 For this he sojourned long below,
A pilgrim in a world of sin,
And drained himself the cup
A better lot for man to win;

of

woe,

Upon his cross, upon his throne,
He died, he lives, for man alone.

JOHN vi. 50, 54. MATTHEW xxvi. 26, 28.

L. M.

REFRESH'D and strengthen'd by his grace

Who loves us with a love divine,

Let us his promises embrace,

While we receive this bread and wine.
2 If saints in glory praise his name,
We too, for whom he died and reigns,
Should give all glory to the Lamb,
And emulate their grateful strains.
3 Though they behold him face to face
While we by faith alone can see,
We, equal debtors to his grace,
Should as devoted to him be.

4 They had like us a suffering time,

Our cares, and fears, and griefs they knew ;
And if they conquered all through him
So we e'er long shall conquer too.

5 Then let us, with the saints in light,
For ever speak his matchless worth;
Assured that he will never slight
The feebler praise we give on earth.

PHILIPPIANS iv. 4.

REJOICE, believer, in the Lord,

Who makes your cause his own;
The hope that's built upon his word
Can ne'er be overthrown.
