4 Till 'midst the streams of distant lands The islands sound his praise,

116

And all combined, with one accord,
Jehovah's glories raise.

mf 1 HARK, the glad sound! the Saviour comes, The Saviour promised long;

f Let every heart exult with joy, And every voice be song.

mf 2 On him the Spirit, largely shed,
Exerts his sacred fire;

Wisdom and might and zeal and love
His holy breast inspire.

3 He comes, the prisoners to relieve
In Satan's bondage held;

The gates of brass before him burst,
The iron fetters yield.

4 He comes, from darkening scales of vice
To clear the inward sight,

And on the eye-balls of the blind
Το celestial light.

pour

mp 5 He comes, the broken hearts to bind,
The bleeding souls to cure,

And with the treasures of his grace
Enrich the humble poor.

m 6 The sacred year has now revolved,
Accepted of the Lord,

mf When heaven's high promise is fulfilled, And Israel is restored.

f7 Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace,
Thy welcome shall proclaim,
And heaven's exalted arches ring
With thy most honoured name.

v 117

mp 1 FATHER, I know that all my life
Is portioned out for me;

m

And the changes that are sure to come
I do not fear to see;

But I ask thee for a present mind,
Intent on pleasing thee.

2 I ask thee for a thoughtful love,
Through constant watching wise,
To meet the glad with joyful smiles,
And to wipe the weeping eyes;
And a heart at leisure from itself,
To soothe and sympathize.

3 I would not have the restless will
That hurries to and fro,

Seeking for some great thing to do,
Or secret thing to know;
I would be treated as a child,
And guided where I go.

4 Wherever in the world I

am,

In whatsoe'er estate,
I have a fellowship with hearts
To keep and cultivate;

And a work of lowly love to do

For the Lord on whom I wait.

5 So I ask thee for the daily strength
To none that ask denied;

And a mind to blend with outward life,
While keeping at thy side;
Content to fill a little space,

If thou be glorified.

6 And, if some things I do not ask
In my cup of blessing be,

I would have my spirit filled the more
With grateful love to thee;

More careful, not to serve thee much,
But to please thee perfectly.

℗ 7 There are briers besetting every path,
That call for patient care;
There is a cross in every lot,

m

And an earnest need for prayer;
But a lowly heart, that leans on thee,
Is happy anywhere.

mf 8 In a service which thy will appoints
There are no bonds for me;

118

For my inmost heart is taught the truth
That makes thy children free;

And a life of self-renouncing love
Is a life of liberty.

P 10 CHRIST, What burdens bowed thy head!
Our load was laid on thee;

Thou stoodest in the sinner's stead,
Bar'st all my ill for me:

Ρ

m

A victim led,

Thy blood was shed;

Now there's no load for me.

p 2 Death and the curse were in our cup— O Christ, 'twas full for thee!

m

mp

m

But thou hast drained the last dark drop'Tis empty now for me!

That bitter cup

Love drank it up;

Now blessing's draught for me.

P 3 The Father lifted up his rod-
O Christ, it fell on thee!

[merged small][ocr errors]

mp

Thou wast sore stricken of thy God—
There's not one stroke for me:
Thy tears, thy blood,

Beneath it flowed;

Thy bruising healeth me.

? 4 The tempest's awful voice was heard— O Christ, it broke on thee!

mp Thy open bosom was my wardIt braved the storm for me.

m

Thy form was scarred,
Thy visage marred;
Now cloudless peace for me.

P 5 The Holy One did hide his face-
O Christ, 'twas hid from thee!
Dumb darkness wrapt thy soul a space-
The darkness due to me:

с

But now that face

Of radiant grace

Shines forth in light on me.

mp 6 For me, Lord Jesus, thou hast died, And I have died in thee!

mf Thou 'rt risen; my bands are all untied; And now thou liv'st in me. When purified,

Made white, and tried,

f

Thy glory then for me!

119

mf 1 I GREET thee, my Redeemer sure, I trust in none but thee,

mp

m

Thou who hast borne such toil and shame
And suffering for me.

Our hearts from cares and cravings vain
And foolish fears set free.

mf 2 Thou art the life by which we live ; Our strength is all from thee;

mp Uphold us so in face of death,
What time soe'er it be,

That we may meet it with strong heart,
And may die peacefully.

m 3 The true and perfect gentleness
We find in thee alone;

Make us to know thy loveliness;
Teach us to love thee known;
Grant us sweet fellowship with thee
And all who are thine own.

mf 4 Our hope is in none else but thee;
Faith holds thy promise fast;

m

Be pleased, Lord, to strengthen us,
Whom thou redeemed hast,
