mf 5 Jesus, our only joy be thou,
As thou our prize wilt be;
Jesus, be thou our glory now,
And through eternity.

[blocks in formation]

mf 1 O JESUS, King most wonderful!
Thou Conqueror renowned!
Thou Sweetness most ineffable,
In whom all joys are found!

m 2 When once thou visitest the heart,
Then truth begins to shine,
Then earthly vanities depart,
Then kindles love divine.

mf 3 0 Jesus, Light of all below!
Thou Fount of life and fire!
Surpassing all the joys we know,
And all we can desire,-

71

m 4 May every heart confess thy name,
And ever thee adore,

And, seeking thee, itself inflame
To seek thee more and more.

5 Thee may our tongues for ever bless,
Thee may we love alone,

And ever in our lives express
The image of thine own.

mf 1 THERE is a land of pure delight, Where saints immortal reign;

mf Infinite day excludes the night,
And pleasures banish pain.

2 There everlasting spring abides,
And never-withering flowers;

mp Death, like a narrow sea, divides
This heavenly land from ours.

mf 3 Sweet fields, beyond the swelling flood,
Stand dressed in living green :
So to the Jews old Canaan stood,
While Jordan rolled between.

mp 4 But timorous mortals start, and shrink
To cross this narrow sea,
And linger, shivering on the brink,
And fear to launch away.

m 5 0 could we make our doubts remove-
Those gloomy doubts that rise—
And see the Canaan that we love
With unbeclouded eyes,

mf 6 Could we but climb where Moses stood, And view the landscape o'er,

f Not Jordan's stream, nor death's cold flood, Should fright us from the shore.

72

m 1 GIVE me the wings of faith to rise
Within the veil, and see

The saints above, how great their joys
And bright their glories be.

p 2 Once they were mourning here below.
And wet their couch with tears;
They wrestled hard, as we do now,
With sins and doubts and fears.

m 3 I ask them whence their victory came;
They, with united breath,
Ascribe their conquest to the Lamb,
Their triumph to his death.

mf 4 They marked the footsteps that he trod-
His zeal inspired their breast-
And, following their incarnate God,
Possess the promised rest.

f5 Our glorious Leader claims our praise
For his own pattern given,

73

While the long cloud of witnesses
Show the same path to heaven.

m 1 How bright these glorious spirits shine! Whence all their white array?

How came they to the blissful seats
Of everlasting day?

mp 2 Lo, these are they from sufferings great Who came to realms of light,

And in the blood of Christ have washed
Those robes which shine so bright.

ƒ 3 Now, with triumphal palms, they stand Before the throne on high,

And serve the God they love, amidst
The glories of the sky.

f4 His presence fills each heart with joy,
Tunes every mouth to sing;

By day, by night, the sacred courts
With glad hosannas ring.

mf 5 Hunger and thirst are felt no more,
Nor suns with scorching ray;

God is their sun, whose cheering beams
Diffuse eternal day.

6 The Lamb which dwells amidst the throne
Shall o'er them still preside,
Feed them with nourishment divine,
And all their footsteps guide.

7 'Mong pastures green he'll lead his flock,
Where living streams appear;

74

And God the Lord from every eye
Shall wipe off every tear.

m 1 LIGHT of the lonely pilgrim's heart, Star of the coming day!

mf Arise, and, with thy morning beams,
Chase all our griefs away.

2 Come, blessed Lord, bid every shore
And answering island sing
The praises of thy royal name,

And own thee as their King.

3 Bid the whole earth, responsive now
To the bright world above,

Break forth in rapturous strains of joy
In memory of thy love.

mp 4 Lord, Lord, thy fair creation groans,
The air, the earth, the sea,
In unison with all our hearts,
And calls aloud for thee.

m 5 Come then, with all thy quickening power,
With one awakening smile,
And bid the serpent's trail no more
Thy beauteous realms defile.

6 Thine was the cross, with all its fruits
Of grace and peace divine;

f Be thine the crown of glory now,
The palm of victory thine.

75

mp 1 WHEN languor and disease invade
This trembling house of clay,
'Tis sweet to look beyond the cage,
And long to fly away;

m

2 Sweet to look inward, and attend
The whispers of his love;
Sweet to look upward to the place
Where Jesus pleads above;

3 Sweet to look back, and see my name
In life's fair book set down;

mf Sweet to look forward, and behold
Eternal joys my own;

m 4 Sweet to reflect how grace divine
My sins on Jesus laid;

Sweet to remember that his blood
My debt of sufferings paid;
