mp 1 I HEARD the voice of Jesus say, 'Come unto me, and rest;

Ρ

m

Lay down, thou weary one, lay down
Thy head upon my breast:

I came to Jesus as I was,

Weary and worn and sad;

mf I found in him a resting-place, And he has made me glad.

mp 2 I heard the voice of Jesus say,
'Behold, I freely give

The living water; thirsty one,
Stoop down and drink, and live :'

mf I came to Jesus, and I drank
Of that life-giving stream;

C

My thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
And now I live in him.

mp 3 I heard the voice of Jesus say,

C

82

'I am this dark world's Light;

Look unto me; thy morn shall rise,
And all thy day be bright:'

f I looked to Jesus, and I found
In him my star, my sun;

And in that light of life I 'll walk,
Till travelling days are done.

mf 1 My heart is resting, O my God!
I will give thanks and sing;
My heart is at the secret source
Of every precious thing.

mp

Now the frail vessel thou hast made

No hand but thine shall fill;

d For the waters of the earth have failed, And I am thirsty still.

m 2 I thirst for springs of heavenly life,
And here all day they rise;
I seek the treasure of thy love,
And close at hand it lies;
And a new song is in my mouth,
To long-loved music set :-
mf Glory to thee for all the grace
I have not tasted yet;

m

3 Glory to thee for strength withheld,
For want and weakness known,

And the fear that sends me to thy breast
For what is most my own.'

I have a heritage of joy,

That yet I must not see;

C But the hand that bled to make it mine Is keeping it for me.

f 4 My heart is resting, O

6

my

My heart is in thy care;

God!

I hear the voice of joy and health
Resounding everywhere.

Thou art my portion,' saith my soul,
Ten thousand voices say,

And the music of their glad Amen
Will never die away.

83

m 1 O FOR a heart to praise my God,
A heart from sin set free,

A heart that always feels thy blood
So freely shed for me;

mp 2 A heart resigned, submissive, meek, My great Redeemer's throne, Where only Christ is heard to speak, Where Jesus reigns alone;

m

с

3 A humble, lowly, contrite heart,
Believing, true, and clean,

Which neither life nor death can part
From him that dwells within;

4 A heart in every thought renewed,

And full of love divine,
Perfect and right and pure
A copy, Lord, of thine!

and good,

mf 5 Thy nature, gracious Lord, impart;
Come quickly from above;

Write thy new name upon my heart,
Thy new, best name of love.

84

mf 1 FOUNTAIN of mercy, God of love,
How rich thy bounties are!
The rolling seasons, as they move,
Proclaim thy constant care.

m 2 When in the bosom of the earth
The sower hid the grain,

Thy goodness marked its secret birth,
And sent the early rain.

3 The spring's sweet influence was thine;
The plants in beauty grew;
Thou gav'st refulgent suns to shine,
And mild refreshing dew.

4 These various mercies from above
Matured the swelling grain;
A yellow harvest crowns thy love,
And plenty fills the plain.

5 Seed-time and harvest, Lord, alone,
Thou dost on man bestow;
Let him not then forget to own
From whom his blessings flow.

f6 Fountain of love, our praise is thine;
To thee our songs we'll raise,
And all created nature join

85

In sweet harmonious praise.

mp 1 0 GOD of Bethel, by whose hand
Thy people still are fed,

Who through this weary pilgrimage
Hast all our fathers led,

m 2 Our vows, our prayers, we now present Before thy throne of grace;

God of our fathers, be the God
Of their succeeding race.

mp 3 Through each perplexing path of life Our wandering footsteps guide; Give us each day our daily bread, And raiment fit provide.

m 4 O spread thy covering wings around, Till all our wanderings cease,

And at our Father's loved abode

Our souls arrive in

peace.

5 Such blessings from thy gracious hand Our humble prayers implore,

mf And thou shalt be our chosen God And portion evermore.

mp 1 FAR from the world, O Lord, I flee, From strife and tumult far,

From scenes where Satan wages still
His most successful war.

2 The calm retreat, the silent shade,
With prayer and praise agree,
And seem, by thy sweet bounty, made
For those who follow thee.

m 3 There, if thy Spirit touch the soul,
And grace her mean abode,

mf O with what peace and joy and love She communes with her God!

m 4 Author and Guardian of my life, Sweet Source of light divine,

с And-all harmonious names in oneMy Saviour, thou art mine!
