Mr. JONES. Yes; and I might say that while I cannot prove it, I notice the recent figures on the drop in food prices, and it has shown that prices of food in California have dropped less than in any other State in the Union, and that is the No. 1 agricultural State today. Mr. McCONNELL. Is the 48-hour maximum prevalent in most State laws?

Mr. JONES. I have the entire list for all the States here, sir. Mr. McCONNELL. Excuse me. There is no use in reading it. Mr. JONES. Well, there are wide variations. For instance, in the State of Washington, the minimum wage is 322 cents for 8 hours a day and 48 hours a week. You find some States where you get up to $15 and $20 a week. A number of States have classified areas to take account of the difference in the high-cost communities and lowcost communities. And one of the things in the application of this legislation to retailers would be that you would not have the present situation, with which we are all familiar, where you have high-cost towns and low-cost towns. To apply rigid standards to all retailing, you would make high-cost towns out of all of them.

Mr. MCCONNELL. On a 48-hour maximum, does that apply to most States? That is what I have not gotten the answer on.

Mr. JONES. The high on hours that I see here is Wisconsin, 50 hours; New Hampshire, 54 hours; South Dakota 54.

Mr. McCONNELL. If there are no objections, I would like very much to have that inserted right here in the record, Mr. Chairman.

Mr. LESINSKI. Will the gentleman mind inserting that in the record? Mr. JONES. No, I will be glad to, sir.

Mr. KEARNS. What is the situation in Wisconsin?

Mr. JONES. In Wisconsin, they divide the State up into three separate areas: Class A, 45 cents an hour; class B, 40 cents an hour; and class C, 38 cents. In other words, there is a differential of 7 cents between Milwaukee, for instance, and Ripley.

Mr. LESINSKI. If there is no objection, that will be placed in the record.
