Juvenile Books.

Good healthful fun is the chief ingredient of Augustus Hoppin's new book "Two Compton Boys," and whoever follows the adventures of Dick Reydon, and his faithful squire "Peez" Fitts, cannot help laughing over their queer doings. Miss Kamlin's school, the old carpenter who cured warts, the robbing of the hawk's nest, the fishing excursion where Dick was pulled into the pond by a mud-turtle, and the devoted "Peez" shut up in a tomb by Mike Taggart, Lucy Bingham's party and her sister's efforts to amuse the children, the drive to Tuxet and its consequences all these are told with such "go," and are so full of happy hits, jolly sayings, and absurd situations, that the reader fairly shouts with laughter over them. Apart from this, the book gives an accurate picture of boy-life forty years ago, and as the New York Evening Post said of Mr. Hoppin's "Recollections of Auton House" ($1.50), "if one could help laughing over

them, they might be pronounced a serious contribution to American history." The volume, like "Auton House," is full of pictures of the same genial character as the text, and as a whole, it is one of the brightest, breeziest, and most rollicking juvenile books of the season.

Christmas is not Christmas, a good many children think, without a Bodley Book, and this year that pleasant family make their last appearance in "The Viking Bodleys," a record of an excursion to Norway and Denmark. Among the incidents of their trip is a visit to the home of Andersen, and they are much interested in the curious features of Scandinavian life and scenery. The book has a great many pretty illustrations. thorne's "Wonder-Book" has already been mentioned.

Four Attractive Calendars.

Haw

Passing time may this year be measured by four attractive Calendars. Of these the Holmes Calendar is entirely new, Dr. Holmes's writings never having been drawn upon hitherto for this purpose. The Emerson, Longfellow, and Whittier Calendars are republished, for 1885, with newly arranged selections, as well as new cards decorated in gold and colors by such skillful artists as Miss Florence Taber and Messrs. Crowninshield and De Thulstrup. Each of the Calendars has a portrait of the author from whose works it is compiled.
