Edinburgh, March 1st, 1853.

"The plan of the BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY is perfect. Londoners, Provincialists, and Scots are here all arranged together, in alphabetical order, as members of one great professional body. Nothing could be better, and yet the price is only half the cost of the Directory that has so grossly outraged the feelings of the Profession."

Manchester, March 7th, 1853.

"Most truly may it be said that the BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY has not appeared too soon. The want of such an orthodox Directory was felt by all, and by none more than by the members of the Medico-Ethical Society of this City. We all thought that the London and Provincial Directory was doing great mischief. The distinctions and titles given to the quacks in that publication could not fail to be disgusting and insulting to every respectable practitioner. Collectively and individually our utmost efforts will be made to promote the circulation of the BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY."

Exeter, March 10th, 1853.

"A greater service could not have been rendered to the respectable portion of the Profession than by the publication of the BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY. The plan of the work furnishes a keen edge that at a touch annihilates the pretensions of a class of infamous quacks. The BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY ought to be, and it will, and must be, in the hands of every regular Medical Practitioner in the kingdom.

Taunton, March 14th, 1853.

"If the Profession neglected to afford the most active and energetic support to the Editors of the BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY, their own injury would have been a deserved punishment for such suicidal supineness. The London and Provincial Medical Directory has exhibited the names of the quacks ornamented with so many flashy titles that the work has done much mischief to regular practitioners, while it has advanced the interests of a set of audacious knaves."

Birmingham, Oct. 4th, 1853.

"If the Profession had known that the London and Provincial Medical Directory had been the exclusive property of a notorious advertiser, and was entirely under the control of that person, it would never have found its way amongst the respectable ranks of our body. That such a production should favour the quacks was quite natural. If it effect any further mischief, or should it even be published at all in 1855, the fault and the disgrace will lie at our own doors, or rather on our own tables."

Bath, October 11th, 1853.

"In the relation of poison and antidote, the London and Provincial Medical Directory and the BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY are now presented to the Profession. The choice is not perplexing. But we must not only select--we must exclude, and everywhere denounce the poisonous work. It is in the power of the Profession to give to the legitimate guide a very great circulation. It is equally in our power to restrict within the most confined limits the circulation of a book whose proprietor states that he has been obliged to omit the titles of the quacks with a view to obtain support by gratifying the depraved appetite' of the Profession! Any directory published by such a party ought to be kept out of the house of every regular practitioner, and also out of every place where his influence extends. It is certain that if the BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY were to be relinquished, we should be again insulted and injured as before."

Liverpool, October 21st, 1853. Anything more worthy in the form of a medical directory I have never beheldplan, execution, form, contents, appearance and price, all claim for the BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY the most strenuous and undivided support of the Profession.

Macclesfield, October 28th, 1853.

"A greater insult to the Profession was never penned, and this, too, from an advertising aurist. At last, the gaudy titles and distinctions of the quacks have been expunged (since the publication of the BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY, be it noticed,) in the hope of keeping up a little sale by satisfying the depraved appetite' of the Profession. To reward such a man by allowing him to make a profit out of us would be voluntarily courting our own shame and degradation."

London, December 17th, 1853.

"Most likely you have seen that in a note from MR. JOHN CHURCHILL, the medical publisher, of Princes-street, he admits that his sale of the London and Provincial· Medical Directory, for 1853 was three hundred and thirty-four copies. This admission is dated December 12, 1853, and is signed John Churchill.' What will the advertisers in the London and Provincial Medical Directory say to this? It is known to you, of course, that Mr. Churchill has not any share or interest whatever in the copyright of the expiring directory."

An Extract from our own Announcement of "THE BRITISH MEDICAL
DIRECTORY."

"The Editors of THE BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY feel infinite pleasure in announcing, that in consequence of the great success of that work, the Proprietors have authorised them to state that ONE-HALF of the profits arising from the Publication will be handed over to Mr. PROPERT, the Treasurer of the MEDICAL BENEVOLENT COLLEGE, as a Contribution to the FUNDS of that noble institution.

"The Profession having by their powerful and universal patronage and assistance completely identified themselves with the principles and success of THE BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY, the allocation of a moiety of the Profits arising from its Publication is made as a free and graceful offering in aid of an establishment which is dedicated to the noblest of charitable purposes.

"The Editors of this Directory consider it right to make the Profession acquainted with the fact that the compilers of The London and Provincial Medical Directory have just made the following admission in reply to a letter of complaint that had been addressed to them by one of the globulist practitioners:

"We have omitted the appointments and the publications because the Profession declared they would not support the Directory' if these obnoxious addenda were inserted; BUT IT WAS CONTRARY TO OUR JUDGMENT, and WE MUST ADMIT IT WAS CONTRARY TO THE PROFESSED OBJECTS OF THE DIRECTORY.' The doctor must look upon us only as caterers for the Profession, subject to dismissal and defeat IF WE DO NOT SATISFY THE APPETITES, WHETHER DEPRAVED OR OTHERWISE, of our supporters.'-EDITORS OF THE MEDICAL DIRECTORIES.

"Thus it is perfectly evident that if THE BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY were not in the field, The London and Provincial Medical Directory would again contain the titles, distinctions, and public appointments of all the quacks in the kingdom.
