"That the compilation of such a goodly tome as this has been a task of no ordinary difficulty may be easily believed. It is a new work-a first effort-and the labour has been literally immense. The delay in its publication has been unusual, but that is compensated for by the fact that a Medical Directory without quackery has been produced, and that even in this light alone it is an important production. As it stands, it may bear the test of comparison with the best works of its class in any country. Therefore it can be cordially recommended." (FROM THE Weekly News and Chronicle.) "The new Directory (the BRITISH) has the further advantage of including in one list the London and Provincial practitioners, which we find to be far more convenient than their separation; and of also comprehending the Scottish list. It also contains a large amount of general information. As to price, also, we decidedly prefer the new Directory." (FROM THE Morning Advertiser.) "This Directory contains a quantity of very useful information, statistical and otherwise, on matters of interest to the medical profession." (FROM Lloyd's London Weekly Newspaper.) "THE BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY makes its first appearance for the current year, and is a very formidable rival to the only other existing Medical Directory, the London and Provincial.' Possessing many features in common with the older work, it differs from it in giving town and country practitioners in one alphabetical list instead of two. It contains an excellent almanac, and much information for all classes of readers. It is a very creditable production, and deserves the support of every legally-qualified practitioner. It is handsomely got up, and at an extremely moderate price." (FROM THE Weekly Times.) "The contents of this Directory are so multifarious, that it would occupy too much space to enumerate them all. There is a great deal of valuable information about the profession, and it is a book that ought to be in the hands, not only of medical practitioners, but of the public generally," (FROM THE Spectator.) "The list of all town and country practitioners is alphabetical; there is various collateral information, as lists of Poor-law Medical Officers, Hospitals and Medical Schools, &c.; with an Obituary. The volume also contains a good deal of general matter." (FROM THE Britannia.) "This is the first number of a most important publication, and we heartily wish it may have the success its great practical utility deserves." (FROM THE Weekly Dispatch.) "It contains an enormous amount of information, direct and indirect, tables of statistics, agencies, and so on, ad infinitum; and it would puzzle a tolerably conversant man to show rather what it lacked than what there was redundant, since all its contents appear to have a decisive reference to the original purpose of its appearance." (FROM THE Medical Times and Gazette.) "The new Directory, (the BRITISH MEDICAL,) we feel it our duty to state, is a very creditable production. It is published at a very cheap rate. A great amount of useful and interesting matter is presented to the reader upon many points bearing directly and indirectly upon the interests of the medical profession." OPINIONS OF THE PROFESSION. SELECTIONS FROM THE OPINIONS EXPRESSED BY MEMBERS OF THE PROFESSION OF THE HIGHEST REPUTATION AND INFLUENCE. Bristol, Feb. 25th, 1853. "Only one opinion existed here relative to the necessity that was felt for the publication of such a work as the BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY; and now that it has arrived, the satisfaction that it has afforded is immense. With a Directory of this kind attainable at a cost that is marvellously moderate, the one which has so long insulted and injured us will not be again seen on our tables. As the Editors of the BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY, you are entitled to our warmest support and gratitude.” Taunton, Feb. 26th, 1853. "The practice of garnishing the names of the infamous quacks in the London and Provincial Medical Directory with grand distinctions and fraudulent titles was insulting to regular practitioners-it was worse-it was calculated to work out a deception in the public mind by confounding honourable men with knaves. The BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY gives a death-blow to this infamous system." Leeds, Feb. 28th, 1853. "Guided by correct professional objects, you have produced a beautiful Directory at only a fraction more than half the price of the one that has taken so discreditable a position. The plan of the BRITISH MEDICAL DIRECTORY is perfect, and the work is sure to receive the hearty and active support of the Profession," |
