a trial" advertisement in any publication. They want to hear from the readers; they demand some evidence that their advertisements are read.

Now, the situation is this: It devolves upon the Editor and Manager to secure new advertisers, but the membership is responsible for keeping them. If a manufacturer of overalls, or of watches, or of anything else that is usually purchased by railroad men, agrees to pay the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen a certain price for a certain advertisement, and then the members -28,000 of them-do not pay the least attention to this advertisement, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen will be the loser.

Do not understand that the claim is made that members should buy that which they do not want; but remember that it devolves upon you to endeavor to have your merchants handle the goods that are advertised in your MAGAZINE, and that it encourages advertisers for you to write to them, always mentioning that you saw their advertisement in the Locomotive Firemen's Magazine.

The business firms that have shown their friendship to the LOCOMOTIVE FIREMEN'S MAGAZINE by advertising in this issue are classified as follows, and you should see that these goods are on sale in your town, or else correspond with them relative to their goods.

Of course, railway supplies are sold direct to purchasing agents of railroads, but even they like to know that you are reading their advertisements.

On the back cover appears, in addition to the premium offer of beautiful gold badges and watch charms, Walter Baker & Co.'s famous Breakfast Cocoa and J. L. Prescott & Co.'s Enameline, both of which have a world-wide reputation, and should be sold by every dealer in that class of goods in your city.

Page II has for a starter Stannard & White's celebrated Cab Seats. Stannard had a fine exhibit of these seats at Toronto during the convention. St. Jacob's Oil follows-and a drug store without it is only half a drug store. Then comes H. W. Johns Mfg. Co.'s Vulcabeston Packing and Fire-Felt Locomotive Lagging. Call the attention of your roundhouse foreman or your master mechanic to the fact that in their advertisement in the LOCOMOTIVE FIREMEN'S MAGAZINE they offer to send samples free. The Janney Freight Car Coupler of the McConway & Torley Co. is familiar to all readers, both as an advertisement, and as one of the greatest safety devices ever placed on a car.

Page III contains the advertisement of the Century Atlas of the world, a copy of which is in this office, and while quite expensive, is well worth the money. They will send you one of their best maps and sample pages for five two-cent stamps. The Marks Artificial Limbs, which also appear on this page, carry many a crippled railroad man through life. The three pictures which appear in their advertisement are suggestive both of the dangers of railroading and the excellence of their artificial limbs.

Page IV contains, in addition to a year. Write to Mr. Ball for one of his memorandum books. He doesn't say that he will give them to everybody, but the Editor knows of many to whom he has sent them. Try him.

call for 40,000 subscriptions to the LOCOMOTIVE Firemen's MagazinE, the advertisement of Bro. W. O. Miller, of Lodge No. 174, who manufactures the Brotherhood Salve. He wants agents in every lodge, and you cannot do better than to send for a trial box. The $2.75 Box Rain Coat of Sears, Roebuck & Co. is worthy of investigation. Write them.

Page V advertises two more of Sears, Roebuck & Co.'s goods-their 1899 Mackintosh for $2.95 and a Boy's Suit for $1.95. The International Correspondence School, of Scranton, Pa., offers instruction in mechanical matters that every fireman should appreciate. Write for their circular. The Thermal Vapor Bath Cabinet, the Cook Remedy Co.'s goods, and a book by Charles H. Kerr & Co. are also advertised on this page.

Pages VI and VII contain a great premium offer for new subscribers for the LOCOMOTIVE FIREMEN'S MAGAZINE.

Page VIII has the advertisement of the Estey Organ Co., and every lodge or society that has no organ for its meeting room should write this firm for catalogues and prices. Then comes the B. L. F. Standard Watch, manufactured by the Webb C. Ball Co. Mr. Ball and his watches are so favorably known that they need no introduction. But read what Bro. Chas. Douglass, of 287, says. Bro. Douglass secured one of these watches as a premium for subscriptions to the LOCOMOTIVE FIREmen's MagazinE, notwithstanding Bro. Singer, of the same lodge, secured two others as premiums during the same

Page IX is entirely taken up with the advertisement of Williams' Shaving Soap, and in return for their patronage of the LOCOMOTIVE Firemen's Magazine have your barber read their advertisement and send for a "trial tablet." What's the matter with sending yourself? It will only cost you a two-cent stamp. But be sure and mention the LOCOMOTIVE Firemen's MagAZINE.

Page X has advertisements of two old friends—the Baldwin Locomotive and the Sellers Injector. Many are the dollars that enginemen have earned on Baldwin locomotives, and the Locomotive Feed Water Strainer saves an engine crew enough grief to justify them in petitioning their master mechanic to accept the liberal offer of Wm. Sellers & Co. to send one on trial.

Page XI has an advertisement of the Oshkosh Clothing Mfg. Co., which firm is making overalls and jackets especially for railroad men, They employ union labor, and are determined to do business with the railroad men of the country. Prosser & Son advertise the Krupp Steel Tires, and the Signal Oil Co. sets forth the well-known excellence of Sibley's Perfection Valve Oil. Sears, Roebuck & Co. offer to sell a Reservoir Coal and Wood Cook Stove. Read their ad. and write them for particulars.
