MURE SCHOLARSHIP.

This Indenture made the twentieth day of December One thousand eight hundred and seventy seven between The Lord Richard de Aquila Grosvenor of 76 Brook Street in the County of Middlesex The Right Honorable Sir Robert Joseph Phillimore of Arlington Street in the County of Middlesex Charles Watkin Williams Wynn of Coed-y-Maen in the County of Montgomery Esquire M.P. The Reverend Henry Bull Clerk of Lathbury in the County of Buckingham and William Wickham of Green Street in the County of Middlesex Esq (hereinafter called the Sub Committee) of the one part and The Governing Body of St. Peter's College Westminster (otherwise called Westminster School (hereinafter called the Governing Body) of the other part: Whereas a Committee having been formed for the purpose of raising a Fund for the establishment of a Mure Scholarship issued and circulated a Statemeut (setting forth the affectionate regret felt for the loss of Mr. James Mure, the services he had rendered to the School, and the desire generally felt to perpetuate his memory by the establishment of a Scholarship to bear his name). And whereas the Fund formed by the Contributions received in answer to the foregoing Statement is invested in and represented by the sum of One thousand two hundred and thirty pounds Debenture Stock of the London and North Western Railway Company, now standing in the names of Charles Bagot Phillimore Esquire of Hurley Manor House, Berks, and William Sandys Wright Vaux Esquire of 22 Albemarle Street London. And whereas the Committee in order to accomplish the objects for which the Fund was formed have determined upon transferring the said sum of Stock into the name of the Governing Body and the Governing Body have agreed to accept and hold the same upon the trusts hereinafter declared: And whereas the several persons herein before called the Sub-Committee were chosen by and out of the Committee for the purpose of being parties to the Indenture declaring the Trusts Now it is hereby agreed and declared between and by the parties hereto in manner following, that is to say :

(1) The Governing Body shall have power from time to time at their discretion to vary the present or any future Investments of the Fund.

(2) The said sum of Stock and every Security or Securities in which the Fund may be invested shall be held on Trust for a

Scholarship at Westminster School to be given primarily as an encouragement to proficiency in the Classical Literature of the Greek and Latin Languages and to be called "The Mure Scholarship."

(3) Every Boy who having completed one year at Westminster School is still being educated at the School and who is of the qualified age shall be eligible for the Scholarship and no other person shall be eligible.

(4) The Scholarship if not otherwise determined shall determine immediately on the Holder of it ceasing to be educated at the School.

(5) A Boy shall be considered to be of the qualified age if he has reached his Fifteenth and not passed his Seventeenth Birth day on the Twenty-fifth day of March in the year in which the election takes place and not otherwise.

The five foregoing Trusts or Rules are to be considered as Fundamental and are unalterable.

(6) The Scholarship shall be given yearly and shall be held for one year from the date of Election.

(7) An Examination of the Candidates shall be held by an Examiner in the month of October and the Boy whom the Examiner shall report to the Head Master as being in his judgment the best qualified shall be the Holder of the Scholarship and such Boy shall not be eligible for the Scholarship a second time. If two Boys are equally qualified the two shall be the Holders of the Scholarship and shall divide the emoluments between them.

(8) The Examination shall be in Latin and Greek Classical Authors and in Composition in both Languages and both in Prose and Verse with a critical paper, a Paper in Modern History and a Paper in Divinity; but the Examiner shall have principal regard to proficiency in Classical Literature as prescribed in the Fundamental rule or Trust numbered (2).

(9) The Examiner may request the assistance of the Head Master in the examination, and may before making his Report consult him as to the moral qualities of the Candidates.

(10) A Fee not exceeding Eight Guineas shall be paid to the Examiner who is to be appointed by the Head Master.

(11) The Holder of the Scholarship shall receive a copy of the Lusus Alteri Westmonasterienses bound and having the Arms of St. Peter's College stamped upon it. If the Examiner reports that the second Boy has greatly distinguished himself in the Examination

the second Boy shall receive the same Book or some other book of about equal value at the discretion of the Head Master.

(12) The Dividends and Interest on the sum of Stock and on every Security or Securities in which the Fund may be invested shall be applied first in paying the Examiner and for the printing of the Examination Papers; secondly in providing the Book or Books mentioned in the last preceding Rule; and thirdly in giving the sum of Forty pounds or if there be not sufficient as nearly as may be the sum of Forty pounds in half yearly payments, at six months and twelve months after the date of the Election, to the Holder of the Scholarship. If after these three applications have been made there be any surplus it shall be carried over to and treated as part of the Dividends and Interest accruing in the next ensuing year. But if the surplus at any time and from time to time amount to Fifty pounds it shall be invested and the Scholarship shall be increased by the amount of the Interest or Dividends of the Investment.

The last Seven Rules are not fundamental and may be altered from time to time by the Governing Body with the consent of the majority of the living Members of the Sub Committee (such consent to be testified by their being parties to and executing a Deed embodying the alterations and not otherwise) and after the death of all the Members of the Sub Committee with the consent of the Head Master for the time being. In witness whereof the said Parties hereto of the one part have hereunto set their hands and seals and the said Governing Body have hereunto set their Corporate Seal the day and year first above written.

NOTE.

The Governing Body of Westminster School was constituted under the Act of 1868 on 7th October, 1869.

The Statutes were not in force until 6th November, 1871.

The Regulations were not settled with the Special Commissioners until 28th July, 1871.

The first year of the Accounts for which the Governing Body are responsible is therefore 1871-2

The Accounts run to Michaelmas in each year, and the Financial Returns are necessarily made out to that date. Returns of numbers, &c., are given for each year from 1st January to 31st December.

The Building Fund consists of a sum of £15,000 cash paid over by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under the Act of 1868, and invested in Consols, the accruing interest being added to the capital half yearly. The Fund is subject to a charge of £10,000 for the purchase of three houses, which are to revert to the Governing Body on the expiration of existing interests.

2. The cost of repairs for College and School has been increased— (1.) By the state of decay in which the premises were handed over by the Chapter. (2.) By the need of alterations in College to provide another class room. (3.) By settlements in the buildings.

The extra outlay is now, it is hoped, at an end.

3. The expense of service for College is partly due to the fact that no accommodation for servants exists, or can be provided, on the school premises.

1. Annual Receipts from Endowment.

2. Annual Receipts from School Charges; Entrance Fees being distinguished from Tuition Charges.

3. Annual Expenditure; the Amount Expended under each of the following heads being shown:-Masters' Stipends, Maintenance of Queen's Scholars, Repairs of School Buildings, and Remainder.
