in crops of coffee or cane or tobacco from what ever cause they should occur.

Ornamental plants, bulbs, fiber and medicinal plants. might receive some attention to advantage. The list of plants which will grow and thrive in Porto Rico is a long

one.

On this date 1st July, 1901, the appropriation by the United States Congress for the establishment of an Agricultural Experiment Station in Porto Rico goes into effect. Effort is now being made by Mr. Frank D. Gardner, special agent in charge of the work, to secure suitable land for the experimental farm and active operations will soon begin along practical lines such as seem most in demand for the good of the agriculture of the Island.

The Board of Education is building rural schools in all parts of the island, each surrounded by a plot of land which is to be used for agricultural purposes. This will afford opportunity for the pupils to plant and cultivate as well as observe the manner of growth and development of various economic plants. The influence for good that these institutions should exert upon the people can scarcely be over estimated.

It is estimated that there are about 50,000 newspapers printed in the world, and of these more than one-half are in the English language, and more than forty per cent of the whole are published in the United States of America.

From these figures one is led to believe that English is destined to become the universal language.
