we have already described. Messrs. Shaw & Co.'s Christian Visitor's Handbook to London tells its own character. It makes no allusion, we find, to the theatres of the metropolis, but in their place contains plenty of useful information for the classes for whom it is intended. Its price is sixpence. Messrs. Cassell's Illustrated Guide to London, price one shilling, of which there is also a French edition, equally deserves notice, and certainly for cheapness cannot be beaten. The name of the eccentric Dr. Joseph Wolff, Vicar of Ile Brewers, Somersetshire, must be added to our literary obituary. Dr. Wolff was born at Weilersbach, near Forchheim. Originally a Jew, his singular career as a convert to Christianity is familiar to numerous readers of his curious biography. Perhaps no man's life was ever more varied and romantic. But English readers will remember him best in connexion with his mission to Bokhara, to inquire into the fate of the unfortunate Captains Stoddart and Connolly. Opinions have been divided upon some matters in his history, but of the truth of the bulk of its singular facts there can be no doubt. Dr. Wolff was in his 67th year. From America we learn that the book trade still suffers to a considerable extent, from the depression which invariably illustrates the truth that literature and war do not agree. Compared with the past season, however, there are hopeful signs. From a writer in the New York Independent, who gossips from time to time on literature, and particularly English works, with remarkable ability and discrimination, we learn that the Spring trade sales of the American publishers have gone off with spirit in New York and Philadelphia. This he considers indicates that a good demand for books still exists throughout the country, and that the stocks of booksellers, prudently kept low during the last year, now need general replenishing.
