are equally known in France, England, and Holland, and who has already acquired an honourable reputation by his former works.

A new weekly penny periodical is announced, entitled Colman's Magazine. It has a good list of principal contributors, and aims at supplying a superior kind of literature to that which is generally found in similar publications.

The Australian papers bring us the announcement of the death of Mr. Charles Whitehead, the author of one or two successful works of fiction, and of several plays. Mr. Whitehead left England some years ago, and had since resided permanently in Australia. He was a frequent contributor to Bentley's Miscellany in its best days, but is perhaps best known by his novel of Richard Savage, and by his attempts to vindicate the claims of his hero to be regarded as the child of the Countess of Macclesfield, in opposition to the scepticism of the late Mr. Galt. Mr. Whitehead was, we believe, the Author of The Experiences of a Gaol Chaplain, which appeared in Bentley's Miscellany nearly twenty years since, and attracted some attention.

The arrival of a tame gorilla at Liverpool, which appears, if it be a gorilla, at all events, not yet to have developed those instincts of terrible ferocity made familiar to us by the engravings in M. du Chaillu's work, will probably help to revive the discussions on this subject in the scientific meetings of the coming winter. It must be remembered, however, that M. du Chaillu himself describes a young gorilla which he had reared as being harmless and playful. We understand that the new work preparing by Professor Hdxley will also have some curious remarks on this subject, in connection with some old engravings made use of by the artist who illustrated M. du Chaillu's book. The late Archbishop of Canterbury, in disposing of his copyrights and manuscripts, and all his stock of published and unpublished works, has, we understand, reserved the right which he gave to the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge to publish all or any of his Expositions of Scripture which they may desire to use, without paying any consideration or other compensation. A new weekly paper, devoted to the interests of the Working Miners of the United Kingdom, and entitled the British Miner and General Newsman, starts this day, price twopence.
