2 Asleep in Jesus! O how sweet
To be for such a slumber meet;
With holy confidence to sing,
That death has lost his venomed sting.
3 Asleep in Jesus! time nor space
Debars this precious hiding-place;
On Indian plains, or Lapland snows,
Believers find the same repose.
4 Asleep in Jesus! far from thee
Thy kindred and their graves may be;
But thine is still a blessed sleep,
From which none ever wakes to weep.

COME

God's universal goodness.

1OME, let us raise a joyful hymn
To Him who reigns above;

C.M.

To Him whose goodness crowns the year,—
Jehovah, God of love.

2 His hand distils the showers of spring,
And gives the summer heat,

And autumn's golden stores are laid
In plenty at our feet.

3 O'er all our land his bounteous hand
Showers copious blessings down,
Alike upon the peasant's head,
And her's who wears the crown.
4 Then praised be his glorious name,—
For praises He hath won,-

For all these gifts; still more for Him
Through whom these blessings come.
5 And let our notes rise higher still,
More joyful swell our song,
And thank Him for his gift of gifts,
His own, his peerless Son.

6 And blessed be our gracious Lord,
Who our salvation wrought;
For all the mercies we enjoy

Were with his life's-blood bought.

7 For O, had no atoning blood
Been by Immanuel shed,

No spring, no summer here had smiled,
Nor harvest crowned our head.

God our Guardian.

UPWARD

ARD I lift mine eyes;
From God is all my aid;-

The God that built the skies,

And earth and nature made.
God is the tower

To which I fly;
His grace is nigh
In every hour.

2 My feet shall never slide,
Or fall in fatal snares,

Since God, my guard and guide,

Defends me from my fears.
Those wakeful eyes,

That never sleep,

Shall Israel keep
When dangers rise.

No burning heats by day,
Nor blasts of evening air,
Shall take my health away,
If God be with me there.
Thou art my sun,
And Thou my shade,
To guard my head
By night or noon,

6.8.

4 Hast Thou not given thy word
To save my soul from death?
And I can trust my Lord
To keep my mortal breath.
I'll go and come,

Nor fear to die,

Till, from on high,

Thou call me home.

269, "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord." 7s.

LESSING, honour, thanks, and praise,
Pay we, gracious God, to Thee:

Thou, in thine abundant grace,

Givest us the victory:
True and faithful to thy word,
Thou hast glorified thy Son;
Jesus Christ, our dying Lord,
He, for us, the fight hath won.
2 Lo! the prisoner is released,
Lightened of his fleshly load;
Where the weary are at rest,
He is gathered unto God.
Lo! the pain of life is past;

All his warfare now is o'er;
Death and hell behind are cast;

Grief and suffering are no more.
3 Join we, then, with one accord,
In the new, the joyful song:
Absent from our loving Lord
We shall not continue long:
We shall quit the house of clay;
We a better lot shall share ;
We shall see the realms of day;

Meet our happy brother there.

All the promises do travail

With a glorious day of grace:
Blessed Jubilee,

Dawn and shine on all our race!

2 Kingdoms wide, that sit in darkness,
Soon shall see a glorious light;
And from eastern coast to western
Shall the morning chase the night.
Sun of glory,

Rise and robe thyself in might !
3 Fly abroad, thou mighty gospel;
Spread thy conquests; never cease;
May thy lasting, wide dominion,
Multiply, and still increase.
Take thy kingdom,

1

Lord of glory, Prince of peace!

Resting in Jesus.

Jin Thee ourselves we hide;
TESUS, we rest in Thee;
Laden with guilt and misery,
Where could we rest beside ?
'Tis on thy meek and lowly breast
Our weary souls alone can rest.

2 Thou Holy One of God!

The Father rests in Thee,

And in the savour of that blood

Once shed on Calvary.

P.M.

The curse is gone; through Thee we're blest ;
God rests in Thee; in Thee we rest.

3 The slaves of sin and fear,
Thy truth our bondage broke;
Our happy spirits love to wear
Thy light and easy yoke.

The love which fills our grateful breast,
Makes duty joy, and labour rest.
4 Soon the bright, glorious day,-

B

The rest of God,-shall come;
Sorrow and sin shall pass away,

And we shall reach our home;
Then, of the promised land possessed,
Our souls shall know eternal rest.

Salvation through Christ.

RETHREN, let us join to bless

Christ, our peace, and righteousness;
Let our praise to Him be given,
High at God's right hand in heaven.

2 Son of God, to Thee we bow:
Thou art Lord, and only Thou;
Thou, the woman's promised seed;
Thou, who didst for sinner's bleed.
3 Thee the angels ceaseless sing;
Thee we praise, our priest, and king:
Worthy is thy name of praise,
Full of glory, full of grace.

4 Thou hast the glad tidings brought
Of salvation by Thee wrought;
Wrought to set the captive free;
Wrought to bring our souls to Thee.

5 Thee, our Lord, whom we adore,
May we follow more and more:
Guide, and bless us with thy love,
Till we join thy saints above.
