The First English Revolution. (A.D. 1625—1660.)

1. What is the date of the accession of Charles the First? Who was the elector palatine, and what relation was he to the king?

2. What form of religion (established in Scotland) had long been gaining ground in England? What more extreme sect was powerful in England?

3. Whom did the king appoint archbishop of Canterbury, and who was his first minister of state?

4. What were the grievances of which the parliament complained, as embodied in the "Petition of Rights"? Also, what were the courts of "Star Chamber" and "High Commission"?

5. Give some account of disturbances in Scotland at this time (A.D. 1637), and the formation of the "Solemn League and Covenant.”

1. Who was the wife of Charles I., and what religious bias is she said to have given her sons ?

3. What is the date of the accession of James II.? What children had he by his first wife, and whom did they marry? Also, who was his second wife, and what issue had he by her?

4. Who raised an insurrection in the west of England? Give some account of him, also of the revolt and its suppression.

5. What is meant by the dispensing power which the king claimed ? How did he exercise it; and what designs did he thus manifest against the established religion?

6. What act was that which excluded Romanists and others from office? When was it passed; and when was it finally repealed?

7. Describe the king's treatment of the universities; also of the bishop of London and his clergy.

8. What brought matters to an open rupture; and how did the bishops and clergy act?

9. Name the seven bishops who were sent to the Tower; and give an account of their trial and acquittal.

10. Who was invited over; and who were the seven noblemen who invited him? Where did he land, and with what forces? Give the date.

11. Give an account of the proceedings afterwards. How did the

nation act when the king had fled? What is the "Declaration of Rights"?

12. How did the term "Non-juror" originate, and who were the principal non-jurors? Also, who in Scotland maintained the cause of James, and with what effect?

13. What part of the kingdom still remained faithful to James, and what city in the north successfully resisted his efforts? Give an account of the siege.

14. William having landed with an army, a decisive battle was fought. Describe it, mentioning time and place.

15. What city in the west was unsuccessfully besieged, but afterwards being taken, ended the struggle? What were the conditions upon which peace was made?

16. What is the "Act of Settlement;" and in what year was it passed?

17. Describe the unsuccessful attempt of James's son in 1715 to overthrow the "Act of Settlement."

18. Describe, also, the unsuccessful attempt of James's grandson, in 1745.

The American Revolt. (A.D. 1773-1783.)

1. In what year did Columbus discover America? What parts of North America were colonised by the English; and what parts, north and south of the English settlements, by the French?

2. What design did the French form for connecting their northern and southern dependencies? How was this resisted by the English? 3. Give an account (with the date) of the capture of Quebec, which put an end to French sway in North America.

4. Of what political bias and religious views were many of the English settlers, especially in New England? Name the New England states, and their capital.

5. What caused the revolt of the American colonies? Give some account of the dissatisfaction of the colonists, and their resistance to the acts of the English Parliament.

6. How did the colonists commence hostilities, and with what result? Give the date of the battle of "Bunker's Hill."

7. Name the American leaders; and state what decisive step they took in 1776. Give an outline of the document they drew up.

8. In the next year, what plan was formed for isolating the New England states? Give an account of the expedition, the commanders, and its fate.

9. What European powers now successively came forward to aid the Americans?

10. Give an account of General Arnold and Major André.

11. What decisive blow was struck by the combined French and American armies in Virginia? Who were the commanders? In what year?

12. Who had been English Prime Minister during the war? Who now came into office, and made peace with the Americans and their allies? 13. Name the leading articles in the Treaty of Versailles; and give the date of its signature.

14. During the war, what famous siege was unsuccessfully conducted by the French and Spaniards? Describe it.

15. What famous victory, at the end of the war, was gained over the French fleet; and by what new plan in naval tactics?

16. Who was Franklin Gage? Howe? Clinton? Montgomery? Tarleton? De la Fayette? Elliott? Rodney?

English Wars of the French Revolution. (A.D. 1789-1815.)

1. What is the date of the assembly of the States-general in France, and of the execution of the king? Give instances of sympathy in the British Isles with French Republicanism.

2. War being declared with France, give some account of the Duke of York's expedition in 1793-1795.

3. What town was held by the English in the south of France; and what commander gained great fame by making them evacuate it?

4. What country, being overrun by the French, was annexed to the Republic; and what colonies of this country and of France were captured by the English?

5. There were three famous naval victories: one over the French, June 1, 1794; one over the Spaniards, Feb. 14, 1797; and a third over the Dutch, Oct. 11, 1797;-give some particulars about them.

6. There were two mutinies in the British navy this year (1797),give some account of them, their cause, and suppression.

7. There had been for some time dissatisfaction in Ireland,-write a short account of the revolt of 1798, and its suppression.

8. In the same year, what famous expedition left France under Bonaparte? Who followed it, brought the fleet to action after the troops had landed, and gained a complete victory?

9. Bonaparte having left the expedition, and returned to France, the English sent an army to attack the French expeditionary army ;—give an account of their landing and success. Who, from afar off, came to aid them, though too late?

10. What three northern powers entered into a coalition, and for what purpose? How did England act in this emergency? What broke up the coalition, after a few months.

11. Who had been Prime Minister during the war? Who succeeded him, and accepted proposals of peace? Give the date and some particulars of the Treaty of Amiens.

12. What reasons were assigned by England and France respectively for the rupture of the Treaty of Amiens; and what may be looked upon as the real cause?

13. For what avowed purpose did France gather an immense army; and how did England prepare for the struggle?

14. Write a short account of the destruction of the French and Spanish fleets at Trafalgar, giving the date.

15. Who was again Prime Minister in England, but died soon after the resumption of hostilities? Who succeeded him, and also died the same year ?-what year
