What name is given to the immense chain of islands extending from North to South America; and how came they to be so called? Draw up a list of the more important islands, stating to what European power they respectively belong.

2. Name the high peaks in order from the north, distinguishing those which are volcanic; and give some particulars about Chimborazo, Sorata, Cotopaxi.

3. Name the mountain chain which traverses the United States near the Atlantic, and forms the eastern boundary of the great North American valley.

4. What river rises in the first chain, and runs northward into the Arctic Ocean? Name also the great lakes through or near which it passes.

5. Name other lakes and rivers in these northern regions; and give a general description of the country.

6. Trace the course of the great river which runs through the chain of immense lakes eastward into the Atlantic; naming the lakes in order, and the interruption of the navigation between two of them.

7. Name the lake extending southward, and the lake leading from Canada to New York.

8. Name rivers running eastward into the Atlantic.

9. What river waters the great North American valley; and which is the longer branch? Name its tributaries from the east and from the west, and give a description of the river.

10. Draw a map of the American valley, with this river and its affluents.

2. What country is north of the great lakes? Who colonised part of it, and when were they dispossessed of it by the present rulers? Name the chief towns of this country; giving some account of them, and of the rapid growth of the colony.
