The Levite's complaint. JUDGES. The Ifraelites war with Benjamin. 3 (Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Ifrael were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then faid the children of Ifrael, Tell us, how was this wickedness! 4 And the Levite, the hutband of the woman that was flain, anfwered, and faid, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge: 5 And the men of Gibeah rofe against me, and befet the house round about upon me by night, and thought to have flain me; and my concubine have they forced, that fe is dead. 6 And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and fent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Ifrael: for they have committed lewdness and folly in Ifrael. 7 Behold, ye are all the children of Ifrael; give here your advice and counfel. 8 And all the people arofe as one man, faying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his houfe; 9 But now, this ball be the thing which we will do to Gibeah, we will go up by lot against it: 10 And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Ifrael, and an hundred of a thoufand, and a thoufand out of ten thousand, to fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Ifrael. 11 So all the men of Ifrael were gathered against the city, knit together as one man. 12 And the tribes of Ifrael fent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, faying, What wickedness is this that is done among you? 13 Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Ifrael. But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Ifrael: 14 But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Ifrael. 15 And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities, twenty and fix thousand men that drew fword, befide the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men. 16 Among all this people there were seven hundred chofen men left-handed: every one could fling ftones at an hair-breadth, and not mifs. 17 And the men of Ifrael, befide Benja min, were numbered four hundred thou fand men that drew fword; all these were men of war. 18 And the children of Ifrael arofe, and went up to the house of God, and asked counfel of God, and faid, Which of us thall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the LORD faid, Judah ball go up first. 19 And the children of Ifrael rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah. 20 And the men of Ifrael went out to bat. tle against Benjamin, and the men of Ifrael put themselves in array to fight against them at Gibeah. 21 And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and deftroyed down to the ground of the Ifraelites that day twenty and two thousand men. 22 And the people the men of Ifrael encouraged themfelves, and fet their battle again in array, in the place where they put themfelves in array the first day. 23 (And the children of Ifrael went up, and wept before the LORD until even, and asked counfel of the LORD, faying, Shail 1 go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the LORD faid, Go up against him.) 24 And the children of Ifrael came near against the children of Benjamin the fecond day. 25 And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the fecond day, and deftroyed down to the ground of the children of lfrael again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword. 26¶ Then all the children of Ifrael and all the people went up, and came unto the houfe of God and wept, and fat there before the LORD, and fafted that day until even, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before the LORD. 27 And the children of Ifrael enquired of the LORD, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in thofe days; 28 And Phinehas, the fon of Eleazar, the fon of Aaron, ftood before it in thofe days,) fay. ing, Shall I yet again go out to battle againft the children of Benjamin my brother, or fhall I ceafe? And the LORD faid, Go up; for tomorrow I will deliver them into thine hand. 29 And Ifrael fet liers in wait round about Gibeah. 30 And the children of Ifrael went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themfelves in array againft Gibeah, as at other times. 31 And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to fmite of the peo ple, and kill, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Ifrael. 32 And the children of Benjamin faid, They are imitten down before us as at the firft. But the children of Ifrael faid, Let us flee, and draw them from the city unto the high-ways. 33 And all the men of Ifrael rofe up out of their place, and put themfelves in array at Baal-tamar; and the liers in wait of Ifrael came forth out of their places, ove" out of the meadows of Gibeah. 34 And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chofen men out of all Ifrael, and the battle was fore: but they knew not that evil was near them. 35 And the LORD fmote Benjamin before Ifrael: and the children of Ifrael defroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword. 36 So the children of Benjamin faw that they were fmitten: for the men of Ifrael gave place to the Benjamites, because they trufted unto the liers in wait which they had fet befide Gibeah. 37 And the liers in wait hafted, and rushed upon Gibeah: and the liers in wait drew them felves along, and fmote all the city with the edge of the fword. 38 Now there was an appointed fign be. 1 The Benjamites' defolation. Chap. xxi. 39 And when the men of Ifrael retired in 40 But when the flame began to arife up out of the city with a pillar of fmoke, the Benja. mites looked behind them, and, behold, the fame of the city afcended up to heaven. 41 And when the men of Ifrael turned again, the men of Benjamin were amazed: for they faw that evil was come upon them. 42 Therefore they turned their backs he fore the men of Ifrael unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them: and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them. 43 bus they inclofed the Benjamites round about, and chafed them, and trode them down with eafe, over against Gibeah to. ward the fun-rifing. 44 And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men all these were men of valour. 45 And they turned, and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the high-ways five thousand men; and purfued hard after them unto Gidom, and flew two thousand men of them. 46 So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the fword: all thefe were men of valour. 47 But 6x hundred men turned, and ded to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months. 48 And the men of Ifrael turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and fmote them with the edge of the fword, as well the men of every city as the beafts, and all that came to hand: alfo they fet on fire all the cities that they came to. XXI. 1 The people bewailing the defolation of Ben- Now the men of Ifrael had fworn in Miz- 2 And the people came to the houfe of God, and abode there till even before God, and Lifted up their voices, and wept fore; 3 And faid, O LORD God of Ifrael, why is this come to pafs in Ifrael, that there should be to-day one tribe lacking in Ifrael? 4 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rofe early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. 5 And the children of Ifrael faid, Who is there among all the tribes of Ifrael that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Miz peh, faying, He shall furely be put to death. 6 And the children of Ifrael repented them for Benjamin their brother, and faid, There is one tribe cut off from Ifrael this day: 7 How fhall we do for wives for them that remain, feeing we have fworn by the LORD, that we will not give them of our daughters to wives? 8 And they faid, What one is there of the tribes of Ifrael that came not up to Miz. Their deftruction bervailed. peh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabeth-gilead to the affembly. 9 For the people were numbered, and, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabeth-gilead there. 10 And the congregation fent thither twelve thousand men of the valianteft, and commanded them, faying, Go and fmite the inhabitants of Jabeth-gilead with the edge of the fword, with the women and the children. 11 And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye fhall utterly deftroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man. 12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabeth-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan. 13 And the whole congregation fent fome to Ipeak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably unto them. 14 And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had faved alive of the women of Jabeth-gilead: and yet so they furficed them not. 15 And the people repented them for Benjamín, because that the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Ifrael. 16 Then the elders of the congregation faid, How fhall we do for wives for them that remain, feeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin? 17 And they faid, There must be an inheri tance for them that be efcaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not deftroyed out of Ifrael. 18 Howbeit, we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Ifrael have fworn, faying, Curfed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin. 19 Then they faid, Behold, there is a feaft of the LORD in Shiloh yearly, in a place which is on the north fide of Beth-el, on the eaft fide of the high-way that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the fouth of Le. bonah. 20 Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, faying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards; 21 And fee, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. 22 And it fhall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will fay unto them, Be favourable unto them for our fakes because we referved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty. 23 And the children of Benjamin did fo, and took them wives according to their num ber, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their in heritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them. 24 And the children of Ifrael departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe, and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance. 25 In those days there was no king in If. rael: every man did that which was right in his own eyes. The Book of RUT H. CHAP. I. Elimelech, driven by famine into Moab, dietb there. 6 Naomi returning home, 14 Ruth accompanieth ber. N° OW it came to pafs, in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land: and a certain man of Beth-lehem-judah went to fojourn in the country of Moab, he and his wife, and his two fons. 2 And the name of the man was Flimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two fons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Beth-lekem-judah and they came into the country of Moab, and continued there. 3 And Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died; and the was left, and her two fons. 4 And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth and they dwelled there about ten years. 5 And Mahlon and Chilion died, alfo both of them; and the woman was left of her two fons and her husband. 6 Then the arofe with her daughters-in. law, that the might return from the country of Moab: for the had heard in the country of Moab, how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread. Wherefore he went forth out of the place where the was, and her two daughtersin-law with her and they went on the way to return unto the land of fudah. 8 And Naomi faid unto her two daughtersin-law, Go, return each to her mother's houfe: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me. 9 The LORD grant you that ye may find reft, each of you in the house of her husband. Then the kiffed them: and they lifted up their voice, and wept. 10 And they faid unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people. II And Naomi faid,Turn again, my daughters; why will ye go with me! are there yet any more fons in my womb, that they may be your husbands! 12 Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an hutband. If I fhould fay, I have hope, if I should have an husband alfo to-night, and fhould alfo bear fons; 13 Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? Would ye ftay for them from having hutbands? Nay, my daughters: for it grieveth me much for your fakes, that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me. 14 And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kiffed her mother-in-law; but Ruth clave unto her. 15 And the faid, Behold, thy fifter-in-law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods return thou after thy fifter-in-law. 16 And Ruth faid, Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goeft, I will go; and where thou lodgeft, I will lodge: thy people ball be my people, and thy God my God, 17 Where thou diet will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do fo to me, and more also, if aught but death part thee and nte. 18 When the faw that he was fteadfaftly minded to go with her, then the left fpeaking unto her. 19 So they two went until they came to Beth-lehem. And it came to pafs, when they were come to Beth-tehem, that all the city. was moved about them; and they said, Is this Naomi ? 20 And the faid unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: ter the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me. 21 I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: Why then call ye me Naomi, teeing the LORD hath teftified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me? 22 So Nacmi returned, and Ruth the Moab. itefs, her daughter-in-law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab and they came to Beth-lehem in the beginning of barley-harvest. CHAP. II. 1 Ruth gleaneth in the fields of Boaz : 8 be fbeweth her favour. AND Naomi had a kinfman of her huf. band's, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz. 2 And Ruth the Moabitefs faid unto Na. omi, Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of corn after him in whofe fight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter. 3 And the went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech. 4 And, behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and faid unto the reapers, The LORD be with you. And they answered him, The LORD bless thee. 5 Then faid Boaz unto his fervant that was fet over the reapers, Whofe damfel is this? 6 And the fervant that was set over the reapers anfwered, and faid, It is the Moab itith damfel that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab; 7 And the faid, I pray you, let me glean and gather after the reapers among the heaves: fo the came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, that the tarried a little in the house. 8 Then faid Boaz unto Ruth, Heareft thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither go from hence, but abide here fait by my maidens. 9 Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go thou after them: have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee? And when thou art athirit, go unto the ve fels, and drink of that which the young men have drawn. 10 Then the fell on her face, and bowed herfelf to the ground, and faid unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou fhouldeft take knowledge of me, feeing I am a ftranger? 11 And Boaz anfwered and faid unto her, It hath fully been thewed me all that thou haft done unto thy mother-in-law since the death of thine husband; and how thou haft left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a Naomi's inftructions. Ruth lieth at Roax's feet.... 5 And the faid unto her, All that thou fay eft unto me I will do. Chap. ift, Iv. people which thou kneweft not heretofore. 12 The LORD recompenfe thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Ifrael, under whofe wings thou art come to truft. 13 Then the faid, Let me find favour in thy fight, my lord; for that thou haft comforted me, and for that thou haft fpoken friendly unto thine handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens. 14 And Boaz faid unto her, At meal-time come thou hither, and eat of the bread, and dip thy morfel in the vinegar. And the fat befide the reapers: and he reached her parched corn, and the did eat, and was futiced, and lett. Is And when the was rifen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men, faying, Let her glean even among the theaves, and re. proach her not: 16 And let fall alfo fome of the handfuls of purpofe for her, and leave them, that the may glean them, and rebuke her not. 17 So the gleaned in the field until even, and beat out that the had gleaned: and it was about an ephah of barley. 18 And the took it up, and went into the city; and her mother-in-law faw what the had gleaned and the brought forth, and gave to her that the had referved after the was fufficed. 19 And her mother-in-law faid unto her, Where haft thou gleaned to-day? and where wroughteft thou? Bleffed be he that did take knowledge of thee. And the fhewed her mother-in-law with whom the had wrought, and faid, The man's name with whom I wrought to-day is Boaz. 20 And Naomi faid unto her daughter-inlaw, Bleffed be he of the LORD, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And Naomi faid unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, one of our next kinfmen. 21 And Ruth the Moabitefs faid, He said unto me alfo, Thou shalt keep faft by my young men, until they have ended all my harveft. 22 And Naomi faid unto Ruth her daugh, ter-in-law, It is good, my daughter, that thou go out with his maidens, that they meet thee not in any other field. 23 So he kept fait by the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley-harveft and of wheat-harveft; and dwelt with her mother-in. law. CHA P. III. 1 By Naomi's infructions, 6 Ruth lieth at Boaz's feet. & Boax acknowledgeth the right of a kinfman. THE HEN Naomi her mother-in-law faid unto her, My daughter, fhail I not feek reft for thee, that it may be well with thee? 2 And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whofe maidens thou waft? Behold, he winnoweth barley to-night in thet hrefhing-floor. 3 Wath thyfelf therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy rainient upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyfelf known unto the man, until he thall have done cating and drinking. 4 And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he fhall lie, and thou thalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do. ་ 6 And the went down unto the floor, and did according to all that her mother-inlaw bade her. 7 And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn: and the came foftly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down. 8 And it came to pafs at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself; and, behold, a woman lay at his feet. 9 And he faid, Who art thou? And the an fwered, I am Ruth thine handmaid; fpread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinfman. 10 And he faid, Bleffed be thou of the LORD, my daughter; forthou haft thewed more kind. nefs in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedft not young men, whether poor or rich. II And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requireft: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman. 12 And now it is true that I am, thy near kinfman: howbeit, there is a kinfman nearer than I. 13 Tarry this night, and it fhall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinfman, well; let him do the kinfman's part: but if he will not do the part of a kinfman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinfman to thee, as the LORD liveth: lie down until the morning. : 14 And the lay at his feet until the morn ing and the rofe up before one could know another. And he faid, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor. 15 Alfo he faid, Bring the veil that thou hast upon thee, and hold it. And when the held it, he measured fix meafures of barley, and laid it on her: and the went into the city. 16 And when the came to her mother-inlaw, the faid, Who art thou, my daughter? And the told her all that the man had done to her. 17 And the faid, Thefe fix measures of bar ley gave he me; for he faid to me, Go not empty unto thy mother-in-law. 18 Then faid the, Sit ftill, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall for the man will not be in reft, until he have finished the thing this day. CHAP. IV. 1 Boaz callerb into judgment the next kinfman: 6 he refusing, 10 Boaz marrieth Ruth. HEN went Boaz up to the gate, and THE fat him down there: and, behold, the kinfman of whom Boaz fpake came by; unto whom he faid, Ho, fuck a one, turn aĥide, fit down here. And he turned afide, and fat down. 2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they fat down. 3 And he faid unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, felleth a parcel of land which was our bro ther Elimelech's: 4 And I thought to advertife thee, faying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it; but if thou wilt not redeem Elimelech's death. I. SAMUEL. it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it befides thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it. 5 Then faid Boaz, What day thou buyeft the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy i alfo of Ruth the Moabitefs, the wife of the dead, to raife up the name of the dead upon his inheritance. 6 And the kinsman faid, I cannot redeem it for myself, left I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyfelf; for I cannot redeem it. 7 Now this was the manner in former time in Ifrael, concerning redeeming, and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his thoe, and gave it to his neighbour and this was a teftimony in Ifrael. 8 Therefore the kinfman faid unto Boaz, Buy it for thee: fo he drew off his shoe. And Boaz faid unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witneffes this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi. 10 Moreover, Ruth the Moabitefs, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raife up the name of the dead upon his Inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witneffes this day. 11 And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, faid, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thine houfe like Rachel and like Leah, Hannah's prayer. which two did build the houfe of Ifrael: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Beth-lehem. 12 And let thy houfe be like the house of Pharez, (whom Tamar bare unto Judah,) of the feed which the LORD fhall give thee of this young woman. 13 So Boaz took Ruth, and the was his wife; and when he went in unto her, the LORD gave her conception, and the bare a fon. 14 And the women faid unto Naomi, Bleffed be the LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a kinfman, that his name may be famous in Ifrael. 15 And he fhall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter-in-law which loveth thee, which is better to thee than feven fons, hath borne him. 16 And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bofom, and became nurfe unto it. 17 And the women het neighbours gave it a name, faying, There is a fon born to Naomi: and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jeffe, the father of David. 18 Now these are the generations of Pha rez: Pharez begat Hezron, 19 And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab, 20 And Amminadab begat Nahfhon, and Nahfhon begat Salmon, 21 And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, 22 And Obed begat Jeffe, and Jesse begat David. Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the fon of ero ham, the fon of Elihu, the fon of Tohu, the fon of Zuph, an Ephrathite: 2 And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. 3 And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship, and to facrifice unto the LORD of hofts in Shiloh: and the two fons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the 1.ORD, were there. 4 And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her fons and her daughters, portions. 5 But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had thut up her womb. 6 And her adverfary alfo provoked her fore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had fhut up her womb. And as he did fo year by year, when the went up to the houfe of the LORD; fo the pro. voked her: therefore the wept, and did not cat. 8 Then faid Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatcft Chou not! and why is thy heart grieved A» Mot Ibetter to thee than ten fons 9 So Hannah rofe up, after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk: (now Eli the priest fat upon a feat by a poft of the temple of the LORD.) 10 And the was in bitterness of foul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept fore. 11 And the vowed a vow, and faid, O LORD of hofts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man-child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there fhall no razor come upon his head. 12 And it came to pafs, as the continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth. 13 Now Hannah, the fpake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought the had been drunken. 14 And Eli faid unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken!
