Side 44 - That the government created by this compact was not made the exclusive or final judge of the extent of the powers delegated to itself; since that would have made its discretion, and not the Constitution, the measure of its powers; but that, as in all other cases of compact among parties having no common judge, each party has an equal right to judge for itself, as well of infractions, as of the mode and measure of redress.
Side xiv - This life's a dream, an empty show ; But the bright world to which I go Hath joys substantial and sincere ; When shall I wake and find me there ? 5 O glorious hour! O blest abode ! I shall be near, and like my God ; And flesh and sin no more control The sacred pleasures of the soul.
Side 46 - ... since the discretion of those who administer the government, and not the Constitution, would be the measure of their powers ; that the several states who formed that instrument, being sovereign and independent, have the unquestionable right to judge of its infraction ; and that a nullification by those sovereignties of all unauthorized acts done under color of that instrument, is the rightful remedy...
Side xiii - Thou art gone to the grave, but we will not deplore thee, Though sorrows and darkness encompass the tomb ; The Saviour has passed through its portals before thee, And the lamp of his love is thy guide through the gloom.
Side xiii - Thou art gone to the grave ; we no longer behold thee, Nor tread the rough paths of the world by thy side ; But the wide arms of mercy are spread to enfold thee, And sinners may hope, since the Saviour hath died.

Side 44 - It appears to your committee to be a plain principle, founded in common sense, illustrated by common practice, and essential to the nature of compacts, that where resort can be had to no tribunal, superior to the authority of the parties, the parties themselves must be the rightful judges in the last resort, whether the bargain made has been pursued or violated.
Side 45 - ... in case of a deliberate, palpable, and dangerous exercise of other powers, not granted by the said compact, the States, who are parties thereto, have the right, and are in duty bound, to interpose for the arresting the progress of the evil, and for maintaining, within their respective limits, the authorities, rights, and liberties appertaining to them.
Side 48 - The speedy establishment on the ruins of the rights of the states, and the liberties of the people...
Side 47 - If the sacred soil of Carolina should be polluted by the footsteps of an invader, or be stained with the blood of her citizens, shed in her defense, I trust in Almighty God that no son of hers, native or adopted, who has been nourished at her bosom, or been cherished by her bounty, will be found raising a parricidal arm against our common mother.
