HENRY D. THOREAU

IN "Walden" Thoreau enumerates, in a serio

humorous vein, his various unpaid occupations, such as inspector of storms, surveyor of forest paths and all across-lot routes, shepherd and herder to the wild stock of the town, etc. Among the rest he says: "For a long time I was reporter to a journal of no very wide circulation, whose editor has never yet seen fit to print the bulk of my contributions, and, as is too common with writers, I got only my labor for my pains. However, in this case my pains were their own reward.' The journal to which Thoreau so playfully alludes, consisting of many manuscript volumes, is now the property of Mr. H. G. O. Blake, an old friend and correspondent of his, and his rejected contributions to it, after a delay of nearly twenty years, are being put into print. "Early Spring in Massachusetts," "Summer," and "Winter," lately published, are made up of excerpts from this journal. A few
