PREFACE.

So many of the Ordinances of the city had been repealed, in whole or in part, or modified by subsequent Ordinances, that the City Council, in September last, deemed it proper to revise and publish them in connection with the statute provisions upon the subjects to which they severally relate. Moreover, the edition of the Municipal Register for 1855, which contained all the Ordinances passed prior to March of that year which were then in force, was out of print, and it was thought a favorable opportunity to execute the work of revision while preparing the Municipal Register for the current year.

The general plan adopted is the same as that of the volume of laws and ordinances prepared by the learned solicitor of the city of Boston in the year 1850, and followed by the compilers of the new edition of the same, published in 1856.

The various Ordinances which were in force were first arranged under appropriate titles, all portions of them being omitted which had been, either expressly or by implication, repealed, and their several amendments being incorporated so as to make but one Ordinance on the same subject. They were then submitted to the Committee on Ordinances, reported in print, amended by the City Council, and, together with such as had originated since the work of revision commenced, adopted as the Ordinances of the City, by an Ordinance passed December 24, 1856, which declared all others void and of no effect.
