David Bles, the great Dutch humorist, is not so well known in England as he deserves. His work is different to that of any of his countrymen, and the only artist to whom he bears a resemblance is Chardin, the French genre painter. Not only does Chardin's workmanship show a great resemblance to that of David Bles, but even in this case their subjects are similar, and have the same sweet note of simple home-life. The aim of this work is to give, in a convenient form, an account of the costume to be found on brasses from the end of the thirteenth to that of the seventeenth century. The literature of monumental brasses is a large one, but most of the important works, the best of which is Haines's Manual, have long been out of print, and are now comparatively costly; a book published at a moderate price will therefore meet the needs of the increasing number of people who are interested in English archæology, and who, at a distance from large libraries, must experience considerable difficulty in pursuing such

a study as that to which this book is devoted. The work is illustrated from monumental brasses either from photographs or rubbings, as fully as has been found possible, including a photogravure frontispiece of the celebrated brasses at Stoke D'Aber

The original scheme of the book included a Bibliography of Monumental Brasses and of Costume as concerned therewith. Unfortunately, space would not permit of its inclusion in the present volume; but it is proposed to issue it shortly as a companion volume, as soon and as reasonablypriced as possible. As there is no published bibliography of the subject, we trust that this will prove of service to archæologists.
