Burgin, G. B.

The Hermit of Bonneville. By the author of "The Ladies of the
Manor,"
" "Old Man's Marriage," etc. Crown 8vo, cloth. 6-

That Mr. Burgin, besides the humour for which his books are so particularly noted, has also versatility, is clear from the fact that while he has written mainly of Canadian life, "The Ladies of the Manor" is largely concerned with English village life. By reason of his humour, and his power of character-drawing, Mr. Burgin's position as a favourite novelist is well established.

The Ladies of the Manor. By the author of "Old Man's Marriage," Crown 8vo, cloth. 6

etc.

Two girls, twins, are born to Marcus Pendragon, Lord of the Manor, their mother dying at their birth. The children are so much alike that a piece of red ribbon is tied to the arm of one and THE DE LA MORE PRESS, ALEXANDER MORING LTD. LONDON W

a piece of blue to the arm of the other to distinguish the elder from
the younger.
By mischance the ribbons are removed, and the
possibility of distinguishing the one from the other is considerably
reduced since the family doctor knows of no marks which would
aid identification. Moreover no such difficulty as eventually arises
is thought of, and until their father's death, and their own coming
of age, no difficulty presents itself. Meantime the development of
the girls' characters shows a marked difference—the one sprightly,
affectionate and good-hearted; the other quite the reverse, a
covetous, selfish girl, with hatred in her heart of the sister whom
she fears is the elder. But it would be unfair to the reader to tell
more of the plot.

Anthony Polgate. With Frontispiece. Crown 8vo, cloth.

"The story

6

. . is admirably told, and there is a raciness and originality in the reflections for which we are duly grateful. The minor characters especially are indicated with much skill and charm, and we are left with the impression that the author enjoyed writing every word of his novel."-Pilot.

“The happy mixture of skill and audacity with which Mr. Ellis conducts an extremely interesting plot. . . More than a casual word of praise is due to the draughtsmanship displayed in the portraiture of the subsidiary characters, and to Mr. Ellis's style, which is quiet, strong, and unpretentious."-Black and White. Flowerdew, Herbert The Woman's View: A novel about Marriage. Crown 8vo, cloth.

3/6 Flynt, Josiah The Rise of Ruderick Clowd. By the author of "Tramping with Tramps." Illustrated. Crown 8vo, cloth. 6

"Here is a . . . powerful description of the life of a New York criminal. The hero is strongly drawn ; one feels what greatness he might have achieved with his strength, his ability, his steadfast determination to win wealth, his resolute facing of the buffets of fate, had his life been different. There are graphic scenes of the under-world of New York. The lawyers, the gossips, the different types of thieves, all are skilfully drawn... A tale to be read and pondered over."-Daily Mail.

"An extraordinarily interesting and able piece of biography.”—Daily Chronicle.

"Mr. Flynt is a writer of great power. This brilliant and masterly

achievement."-Pall Mall Gazette.

In Old Alabama. Illustrated by Carol McPherson. Crown 8vo, cloth. 6

"This book is partly prose fiction and partly negro poetry. The prose consists of short humorous narratives, in which a little negro woman, a popular pedlar, recounts some of the remarkable incidents and adventures of her career. They are told with a peculiar negro raciness and in a peculiar negro dialect, and are brimming over with absurdly funny things. The genius of absurdity revels, indeed, in these pages."-Scotsman.
