FORSTER GROOM & Co., Ltd., 15, Charing Cross, S.W. INFLUENCE OF ENGLISH LITERATURE ON URDU LITERATURE, by SAYYID 'ABDUL-LATIF, M.A. Students' Edition, 5/-. Library Edition, 7/6. The first part deals with the survey of the early history and characteristics of Urdu before the commencement of English influence, and shows that it was the outcome of two contributory streams, namely, the Hindu and the Moslem writings. The second part expains the several channels-educational, religious, political, social, and others-through which English influence has made itself felt, and the different points at which it has impinged upon the life and thought of the country. A profound reaction against old ideals, permeated with Persian influence, has been produced, and English literature has brought about a change of form and technique in verse as well as providing models for prose, which was not attempted until Western culture took root.

This study will prove very interesting to all those who have watched the development of India and the advancement of learning there, and is well worth the study by officers who have served in India.
