This New Edition of The Little Treasury of Leaflets, with the added Sixth Volume to complete the series, has been published by Messrs. Gill, and no pains have been spared to make the work as perfect as possible. The Sixth Volume contains a variety of Devotional Exercises, some having all the freshness of originality, while othe:s are the garnered treasures of Saint and Sage, and its publication has undoubtedly added many choice jewels of thought to a treasure, the great value of which has been attested by its popularity.

needs of a multitude of souls. One cannot open the volumes, even at random, without lighting on some word of comfort for sorrow, some cry of faith and trust in God's Providence, some appeal to angel or saint, or jewel five words long, flashing light on the soul's obscurity, and revealing the path of duty."

MAXIMS AND COUNSELS FOR EVERY DAY IN THE YEAR run to ten dainty volumes, and include the maxims and counsels of St. Alphonsus Ligouri, St. Francis de Sales, St. Francis Xavier, St. Ignatius Loyola, St. Philip Neri, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Teresa, Madame Barratin, and a similar collection compiled from the Holy Scriptures by a Jesuit priest. In the accumulated essence of the daily thoughts of so many reflective minds what irreckonable consolation must there be, from year's end to year's end, for those who, whatever their station, have easy access to them! The volumes are uniform in size

In GOLDEN GRAINS we have a collection of little counsels for the sanctification and happiness of everyday life, translated from the French, and approved by the Cardinal Archbishop of Cambrai, the Archbishop of Aix, the Archbishop of Milan, the Bishop of Montreal and others. These little counsels and reflections are introduced to the reader by this interesting parallel: "In the South of France during the summer months, children and the infirm poor, who are incapable of harder labour, occupy themselves, in order to earn some trifle towards their maintenance, in collecting from the beds of rivers, in which there is but little water, golden grains which are borne on by the stream in its course towards the sea, and which glisten in the sun. What these poor people and children do with the golden grains which God has scattered in these rivers let us also attempt to do with these little counsels which God has scattered everywhere that they may glisten and shed light and comfort for an instant, then disappear, leaving only to the soul the_regret of not having collected them whilst floating by." Convenient to carry, they are issued in three different and artistic bindings.

MONTH OF THE SOULS IN PURGATORY, by the Abbé

day of the month of November. "In the pride of life," we read in the Preface," the world forgets the Holy Souls in Purgatory. But in times of persecution, when death was near, men thought more and had more loving remembrance of the dead." Of no country is this more true than of Ireland. "It is well known in the Christian world that the prayers of the living are of use to the dead, but what is not sufficiently known is that the suffrages of the dead themselves are of benefit to the living. It is true that the holy souls cannot merit for themselves, this being no longer in their power; but they have the means of making their precious merits of value to us. St. Ligouri, Bellarmine, Suarez and most other theologians teach that it is lawful and useful to invoke the souls in Purgatory to obtain the graces and favours we need for soul and body. St. Teresa used often to say that everything she asked of God through the intercession of the faithful departed, was granted her. When St. Catharine of Bologna wanted any particular grace, she always had recourse to the suffering souls in Purgatory, asking them to present her petition to God, and invariably her prayer was heard: even through their intercession she often obtained favours not granted her through the intercession of the saints. God knowing what importance mankind attaches to graces of secondary interest, like recovery from illness, escape from danger, success in important undertakings, has placed the obtaining them in the hands of the suffering souls."

We have, then, everything to gain in the exchange of prayers with the souls of the departed, and how to exchange them worthily and effectively is best learned from this unpretentious volume.

CONSOLING THOUGHTS OF ST. FRANCIS DE SALES, gathered from his writings and arranged in order by the Rev. Père Huguet, make a volume of more than 350 pages, which, with its companion volume, "The Devout Life," forms" a complete course of consolation for all the trials of life." To give more clearness and authority to the book," the author has, from time to time, placed at the foot of the page notes taken from the most esteemed writings of our greatest masters of the spiritual life, particularly Bossuet and Fenelon."

INTRODUCTION TO THE DEVOUT LIFE, by St. Francis de Sales, is a volume of devotion running to 288

Holy Ghost disposes and arranges with such variety the instructions regarding devotions which He gives by the tongue and the pen of His servants that, although the doctrine is always one and the same, the discourses held on it are, nevertheless, very different to the various methods in which they are composed. . . . . They are the same flowers which I present to you, my reader, but the bouquet which I have formed from them will be different on account of the difference in the method of making it."

THE CLOCK OF THE PASSION embraces the pathetic reflections of St. Alphonsus Liguori on the sufferings and death of our Blessed Redeemer, translated from the French by a Catholic priest .. 1 6

THE WAY OF SALVATION, by St. Alphonsus Liguori also, consists of suitable meditations for every day in the year. The Preface has a number of exhortations from St. Francis. de Sales, St. Augustine, and St. Bernard, who says: "Heaven is promised, indeed, to those who begin a new life, but is given to those only who persevere in it." And on the same subject the Blessed Liguori himself says: "I entreat my readers not to be wearied with the frequent repetition of prayers for the graces of the love of God and of perseverance, since these two graces are the most necessary for the attainment of eternal salvation."

Added to these features, for the first time, are motives to incline us to frequent Visits to the Most Blessed Sacrament.
